MIRA

BY: ASHLEY CARLSON

“AHH! What is that horrible noise!” Complained Christine sticking her fingers in her ears.
“I don’t know Christine maybe it’s your singing!” I was not in a good mood.
“Oh haha very funny Iris, I’m dying of laughter.” Christine said sarcastically.
“I’ll go see what it is.” I said heading towards the door.
When I opened it and looked out my eyes widened in disbelief . I saw a strange, red-scaled creature fighting, in what used to be my pepper field, with a coyote. I watched in shock as the two battled back and forth until with an ear-splitting screech and a sickening thud the strange creature fell to the ground. The coyote, panting from the exertion, ran off when it heard the door slam behind me. Hearing the horrible sounds of the fighting Christine had run out beside me on the porch. When she saw the dead creature she turned so pale it would have made a ghost look tan.
“What is that!” exclaimed Christine, eyes wide.
“I don’t know.”
“No! I mean what’s that in the bushes!?” said Christine, pointing. We both walked over to the bush and found a very frightened miniature of the dead creature only this one was jet black with a tail that seemed five times too long for it’s body instead of the two times too long of the dead red one.
“ Ooh isn’t that just the cutest thing you’ve ever seen!” Squealed Christine causing the little lizard to practically leap out of it’s skin.
“Oh Christine, you scared it!” I yelled.
“Well I’m sorry I didn’t mean too!”
“You say that every time!” I shouted. The argument had lasted a couple minutes when we noticed the small creature looking at us, seemingly quite intrigued by the conflict. Apparently it found us amusing as it appeared to be smiling now.

When we finally got the creature inside it was 9 o’ clock. The larger of the two creatures had disappeared in a puff of smoke a few minutes earlier as Christine and I looked on in shock. We made the small, black creature as comfortable as possible in a box in the kitchen and went to bed. I went to sleep wondering what we’d gotten ourselves into.

The next morning I found the creature curled up in the fireplace and Christine trying to make pancakes. I was too tired to care about it laying in the fireplace, and besides, it seemed to be purring in it’s sleep. One of Christine’s pancakes flipped up and stuck to the ceiling. I couldn’t help but say “I think your flip just went flop.” As I sat down.
“Oh Iris you’re awake, I would’ve finished making your pancake but it’s kinda stuck to the ceiling.” She said, embarrassed.
“Aw no big, I was gonna have cereal anyway.” I said having noticed the blackened lumps of pancake dough. When Christine was done she put the pancakes on a plate and drowned them in maple syrup. Suddenly the little black creature leaped up, took one off her plate but when she tried to swallowed it she started to gag. Finally choking it down, she bared her teeth and shuddered.
“What are we going to name it?” Asked Christine while stroking the creature who was clearly enjoying the attention.
“My name is Mira .” It said in a tiny voice.
“I-It talked!” exclaimed Christine, almost falling out of her chair.
“Yeah, wow!”
“That creature that was killed last night, that was my mom, Mystra.” Sobbed Mira. “and the coyote, that was Malazarr , he’s a shape-shifter. He chased us through a portal last night when we were trying to get away from him.”
“Sounds scary.” Christine said softly.
“Yeah, he’s real scary.” Said Mira “His goal is to destroy all dragons of every type.”
Christine and I looked at each other in astonishment
“Ouch.” Said Christine softly.
“Dragons?” I said just as softly.
“When Malazarr invaded Draconis, my home city and overthrew Zaphyr, the old dragon king, it was the beginning of the end for us dragons.

After a long discussion with Mira, Christine and I agreed to help her get back to Draconis. Mira said she could open the magical portal to get back but being so young she lacked the strength to do it alone. Mira told us she needed the leaf of a yucca plant and a cactus flower to complete the spell to open the portal. Being as we lived in the desert these two things weren’t to hard to come by. After a little searching around the neighborhood we came back with the two things Mira needed. We’d made her wait inside the house. As cute as she was we thought we might have a hard time explaining to the neighbors about a baby dragon.

After crushing up the leaf and the flower in Mom’s good crystal punch bowl, the one Mira said would help the spell be stronger, we went out in the backyard to open the portal. I poured the contents of the bowl out in a circle like Mira said too. Mira had explained that adult dragons can do this whenever they want but she was still to young to do it more than once a month and needed the juice of the two plants to help her. Mira then started moving her little paws around and speaking in some unpronounceable language. Just as the glowing portal snapped into existence, a streak of brown shot out of the bushes straight toward Mira. Faster than Christine or I could react the coyote was pouncing on Mira.
“Mira!” We both screamed as Malazarr leapt for her. Faster than the blink of an eye, Mira dodged the attack sending Malazarr crashing into the ground and tumbling wildly through the dirt toward the portal. In a flash of sapphire light Malazarr disappeared along with the portal.
“Oh great! Now Malazarr is back in Draconis and we can’t do anything about it for a month!” Christine shouted.
“Don’t worry, I smelled him coming and said the last word of the spell wrong.” Mira said in her tiny dragon voice.
“So what does that mean?” I said a little too loudly.
“It means Malazarr is not in Draconis.” Mira said, smiling her little dragon smile.
“But didn’t he follow you through a portal last night?” I asked.
“Malazarr can’t do portals, he followed us through the one my mom opened to get away.” Mira said a little sadly.
“So where exactly is he?” Christine asked.
“I think you humans call it, Pluto.” Mira replied while scratching behind an ear with her back claw. “I’ll just do another portal at the next full moon.”
Christine and I looked at each other and had to giggle.

Heck of a sight better than I was writing at age 13. Keep writing, Ash. I'd love to see what you can do by 20.

Wow, when I was 13 I didn't write anything unless I had to. Good work.
I'm not so sure I'd want to get hit by a missile with a "dog brain" AI.
