This post reminded me to check up on my paints and several did really need some checking up on!

every six months my mom and I do a water-and-shake. Open the bottle, look at the texture. If it looks thick (and with practice you can tell) add some distilled water. Replace lid tightly, and shake-shake-shake (whether you added water or not). Mom has about 300 craft paints so it takes a while.

I'm about 2/3rds done and running low on glass agitators.

So who else does this on a schedule?

Not as often as I should, considering half of my collection is pretty geriatric. But so far I haven't left anything to sit and dry up too long. I ought to put the bulletin board back up over the workbench and write a date on a post-it to remind me to do this. Every 3 months, maybe, just to be sure none of the old soldiers have slipped away.

I only have about 45 colors, so they generally don't last long enough for me to have to do much maintenance, but I have had to take the lids off and add water to a few over the years.

It seemed like in the past I was painting enough and circulating stuff around enough not to have to worry about this. But just two days ago, I was cleaning my work area up, and discovered some separation in paints I would not have thought of as old.

So I think this long weekend will be the start of some serious shaking.

Maybe I should start... other than the Great Restoration of my Citadels a couple months ago and shaking the bottles when I use them,i haven't done much paint maintenance. On the other hand,i transport them for paint night, so they do get jostled around some...

I like the idea of agitators. What is the recommendation for those?

Glass beads. Bits of extra sprue. These are the two most common.

With glass beads avoid any beads labeled AB. That is an iridescent finish that may flake off in your paint. Likewise avoid metallic or pearl finishes. You just want a large bag of cheap glass beads, and pick out any that have funky finishes.

I use Danielson sinkers. Lead ones, though they have tin as well. Split shots are the most easy ones for me to get. I don't fish, but I'd guess there's a lot of trout in the nearby ponds so that's probably why those are more common.

Every time I see the name, though, I'm compelled to say "wax on . . . wax off" like Mr. Myagi.

I have done paint maintenance in the past, but I have never had a regular schedule (and it has cost me a few paints). It never really occurred to me before, but I should make it a regular, scheduled thing. Good tip!

I've been using lava beads in my Vallejo bottles. I don't have a schedule for shaking them or anything.

Just remember that nobody will believe you if you go to the police and tell them you're being stalked by an angry goblin wearing Sembia Red warpaint. They'll laugh, escort you home, tell you to sleep it off.
