Hey guys! Does anyone here play Battlefleet Gothic? I got the books for my guy for Christmas but I was hoping to put together two smallish armies for him and a buddy to play. I know this tends to be a personal preference but he really won't mind, in fact I think he'll just be thrilled to be able to play immediately. If someone plays I would really appreciate a fleet list that I can just lookup on eBay or somewhere and buy. Army doesn't matter. I get the impressions that 1500 pt. I'd a good starting area.

Thanks for any help you can offer. He's the worst to buy for! :D

I played once, just a battle box game, and really enjoyed it. Sadly, we couldn't find any more stuff for it. Does GW support it, or is it another of their abandoned children?

I think you have to get the ships directly from them (or on ebay), but I'm not sure. The last time I played was long enough ago that it was still being sold in stores.
But I didn't use their ships, I rebased some ships that I already owned and used them as a "counts-as" fleet.
The base size is pretty important for game mechanics reasons, but as long as both fleets are on the same sizes of bases it should work ok. The smaller ships (up to cruiser size) are on one size of base and everything bigger is on a bigger base. I think they were 30mm and 50mm round bases.

I would recommend a couple of cruisers (any type) and a couple of squadrons of escorts (again any type) for both Imperial and chaos as a starting point. If you got the BFG box you should have cruisers already. The plastic cruisers are a base model with the different variants being made up by what type of bay you mount, so if you get the plastic you can make any of the variants. All are still available from GW, but are priced a bit high for my taste (understatement?). That's a decent sized game, good for leaning, goes quickly. BFG was/is an excellent game, not overburdened with complexity. Have fun.

I play, though I don't know any current players.

Ships must be bought from GW, or on Ebay; the game is no longer distributed to stores (a shame). The stuff on Ebay are the leftovers from when it was in stores. Also don't forget about Forgeworld, which has a lot of ships from the expansions.

If you're interested in using the rules, but not paying GW prices, check out Firestorm Armada (by Spartan Games) ships. I picked up a BFG box set a while ago on DakkaDakka. I'm still considering letting it go since no one around here plays....

Bartertown is a great place for picking up some stuff on the cheap.

If you go with a chaos fleet, I recommend against the Planet Killer. Great model, but pretty unfair to bring to a fight.
