It has iphoto and some other options, but nothing seems to be quite what I'm looking for.

generally the principle should be similar everywhere. if you have two photos (say 500x500pixels), you need to increase size of one photo to be 500x1000. Well, not the photo itself, because that would mess the proportions, but the background or layer size. now you have a place to copy and paste the second photo.
you should be able to do this quickly even in simple software like microsoft Paint.

I used to have Fireworks on both, going waaaay back (some of the fill and line options are my suggestions!), but since the government is systematically defunding public libraries, I'm learning GIMP. Bonus that I can use it for my hobby! :) All the stuff I've posted here has run through GIMP.

I've tried setting him up a few times (I'm a sysadmin by trade) but he always manages to revert it somehow. Seniors and technology.
