nice base!! what did you use for the dirt effect?
I want to say I used an old brush and dabbed on autumn orange/brown, and then do a light wash with brown liner

The only thing that makes me sad is the primer, it appears to be pretty grainy and does not do your work justice.
IMO, I think the roughness gives it the wrought or cast iron look. What works for me about the base is the how the metal looks to be in poor condition and not just rust covered. It reads as a pile of scrap metal so the browns instantly become oxidized metal to the eye.
I will say that the piece reminds me of The Iron Giant.

In any event I liked the piece and second it here. Great work.

IMO, I think the roughness gives it the wrought or cast iron look.
I'm not positive it wasn't that way before I primed it. I picked it up second hand. and I though it gave it the ol' wrought iron look as well
