I bought some of Dungeon Crawler's white plastic "natural" unpainted miniatures to paint up. These are five of the "Giant Ant" natural sculpt. I forgot to take a picture before I started so I am putting up a picture of the unpainted one from their website. I used Reaper black primer to prime them, since they recommend priming these (unlike the Bones which apparently don't need primer when using Reaper paints). They took the black primer very well. Here is a pic of the unpainted one and the inspiration photo I took of a real life fire ant.

Here they are with the black primer applied and a base coat of Walnut Brown for the abdomen and Blackened Brown and with a thick Mahogany Brown wash on the rest of the body and legs.

(I forgot to shrink the file size for this photo.. Sorry! I am not sure if there is a way for me to remove the photo file and re post a correctly sized photo.)

Here I added Blackened Brown shading on the body, and a 50/50 mix wash of Mahogany Brown and Orange Brown for the head, antenna and legs. I also added some Linnen White highlights on the abdomen, head and antena but it looked wrong so I tried to tone it down with a very light wash of walnut brown on the abdomen and mahogany brown on the head. I'm still not thrilled how the highlighting looks, but I'm happy with the overall colors except for the highlights.

Looking good! Love me some giant ants. How do these compare, sizewise, to 28mm humans?

They come on 25 mm bases, so they are Medium size in D&D terms.

If you have any left, you should add green stuff stingers onto their (thorax?).

Cool idea. They are pretty cheap unpainted. I just bought some green stuff and basic sculpting tools. I've never used the stuff, but this might be exactly the project to try as my first attempt to sculpt anything, to add a stinger to the tail end of the abdomen to create soldier ants. If it works out I'll come back and post a photo here.

Why not just drill a hole in the ant and glue in a needle / thumbtack?

These look pretty cool, zoroaster! Are you going to mod the bases to spice em up?

Oh, and notice how the top one has a drop of venom on it's tip. You could use the spittle superglue tactic to make that happen and make it all more cool.
