Yes, it is more expensive to buy one of each of 3 sculpts. But really, is it so much more expensive?
I pulled up the Warlord army packs (sorted most recent to oldest), and chose the first pack that I came across with 3 different sculpts in it - 06163: Orc Bersekers (7). The single model from this pack (14404) is $6.99. If you were to buy the 3 models as bitz, you would spend $7.23/mini. That's less than a quarter more; that's really not so awful. I'm sure there are others that may work out better, and probably some that work out worse. I think part of the problem with people remembering the days of the 3-pack is that they were around $13-15 back then; that vs. $7 and change for a single mini is a big difference. But, back then, single Warlord models were also closer to the $4-4.50 mark.

You can still find three packs for sale on ebay, and Fantization has some left as well. If you buy a larger pack and want to trade them or sell them, let me know. I'm really going at the Warlord range.

Now that I'm really playing Warlord, my ideal pack would be six models.
Funny, I find this to be generally true for myself too. I tend to buy 6 models of a given soldier datacard, unless it is something that I find myself using a lot of (spikeshells, O'lord Warriors, Elven Swordsmen, etc.). In a 1K game, I rarely need more than 6 models for a particular datacard.
Thank heavens for the Boneyard during Rcon. I trade in my extras and pick up others that I need then.

I dream of making it to ReaperCon and trading in a bunch of old metal for Warlord goodness.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that almost anything Reaper has ever made (in house) is available through the NICed catalogue.
While this is true, that does not mean that the packaging method is available (i.e. the 3-packs). You can still purchase every model from them, just not packaged as a 3-pack.

Ah. I must have misunderstood the catalogue. I thought that since the three different poses were shown together with a single price and bar code number it meant that they could be ordered like that. I've never actually ordered from the NICed catalogue so I certainly wasn't speaking from experience. Thanks for clarifying.

Oh, that catalog is correct. The packs listed on the pages you mentioned do include all of those models, but if you notice below where the name is, it lists the number of models in the package. These are the army packs that the OP mentioned. The old 3 packs were just that; just 3 (sometimes 4, in the case of skellies and some other small models) models, one of each sculpt available. Those were DC'd long before 2011, and had 14xxx SKUs, IIRC. The army packs all have 06xxx SKUs instead.

From everything I heard at the time, there was one reason: Sales. The old 3 packs didn't sell well, and apparently the larger 6-10 packs do.

I totally agree with this, but I do wish that the alternate models were better labelled/had pics. I think its happened to me three or four times now that I ordered the alternate sculpt out of the Boneyard (because it wasn't available as a single and I didn't want a 9-pack) and accidentally ended up with two of the main sculpt. Most recently it was with some of the Driders. I wanted both the male and female of the Isiri Arachnid Warriors, and ended up with two (identical) males.
