Found some shelf liner material that makes decent texture for an alien hive base, but it needs something. I just don't know what.

Some kind of vertical component, crystals, tendril growth, goo, pods...

Greebles. Can't go wrong with greebles. Got any plastic kits or spare parts you can carve up?

Buglips, that is just epic, and so very wrong.

Small wire like from a bread tie, poked up and pointing skyward. Then hot glue dribbled down the wire and painted to match the yellow-green of the shelf liner.

Hints of a larger architecture, technological, biological, or both. Tendrils or veins or neural appendages hinting at radial, weblike, fanning or hexagonal structures "off screen". Trick'll be to harmonise visually with the texture there, while still breaking up the repetitiveness of it.

That looks cool. Where did you get it? What's the brand name?

I have some of that but the texture is more regular and not as organic looking.

I've actually seen this glue pattern on the bottom of shelf liner and I think laminate before. I just wasn't clever enough to think of it like the OP.

Thanks for the tips everybody.

Thrift store/ Resale shop. Don't remember the brand name and unfortunately the wrapper was in the trash that just got picked up.

?Greebles? Highlight, Right Click, Google... Ahh, so that's what those things are called. At first I thought "greebles" might have been slang for severed goblin limbs or something.

At no time would Buglips ever condone the killing of his own kind just for base decoration's sake.

Is it flexible? If so, you could put some small hills down on the base beforehand and then lay the mesh over the top, creating an undulating surface. You could also make a sphincter or other orifice on the floor.

Okay, now see the eggs? Right, you know how you'd blend colours? Blend topography instead. If you had a few of the regular grid-bits come up higher so as to feed the egg cluster, it'd look much more organic. Just a thought, if you want to take it that far!
