I'm thinking of setting up a tripod, and setting my camera to look at my paint area and having it take a shot like every 10 minutes. Anyone think this may be interesting, or am I just being silly?

Oh yes, do this. This would be awesome and amazing in like six different ways.

Sounds like a fun project, and from a photography standpoint I'd love to see how you do this. I'm considering picking up an intervalometer for timelapse. My camera can do it while tethered to my computer, but that just makes the whole operation bulky and ties up my computer for too long.

I'm pretty sure my camera can do it on it's own, but I'll have to look into it more.

Alright...we'll chalk this idea up to a dream project. I discovered my camera isn't as cool as I thought. :(

Check online for a product called an intervalometer. If your camera has a place to plug in a remote shutter release, (I think it's standard now on DSLRs), you can plug an intervalometer there and set it to take your timelapse sequence.

Here is a low-end one for Canon on Amazon. $30 seems to be the "midrange" price for them.

If your camera doesn't have a remote shutter release jack, then check your software manual to see if you have the ability for "tethered shooting" or adjusting your camera's settings and taking photos while it is plugged into USB on your computer. It's possible you might be able to set up a timelapse using your computer to set intervals.
