OK, since somebody asked for a WIP, here goes. I'll be working on this guy:



I need to do some research and decide on colors, but I should have paint on him in a day or two.

Nice model, did you choose a color for the skin scales?

Walnut brown for the top/back, khaki highlight for the underbelly. I'm using a King Cobra color scheme for inspiration as far as the skin/scales goes.

Should have pictures tomorrow.

Picked that one up along with the other serpentfolk in the Byard this year. Looking forward to the WiP.

Here he is with some progress on the skin:



The dark parts are Walnut Brown, Citadel Badab Black wash, some more Walnut Brown, and then the Khaki Highlight for...well, a highlight on the edges of the scales. I'm not sure I'm happy with it, but I'm not sure I'm unhappy with it, either, so I'm moving on until I have a reason not to. The underbelly has a base coat of Khaki Highlight, but nothing else yet. I haven't decided what to do about shading it. I also put in his eyes and fangs in hopes that it would help me decide if I liked the skin or not, but it didn't really help. In pictures, eyes of the cobra are usually so dark they blend in with the scales. I wanted some chance of seeing the eyes, so I made them yellow instead.

I'm loving the look of those scales. because of all the white primer it's a little hard to really see how bright they are but I think the colors are working well.

I think that Khaki is a very good choice for the highlight. So far, he look like a King Cobra, very dark and evil.
The black scales will make a good contrast with the cloak depending on the color you choose.
I'm with you for the eyes color, they already look nice but some yellow will bring them out.

The scales look great, will have to look back at this for a serpent folk fig I want to paint

The yellow eyes weren't really showing up, so I made them a bit bigger and switched to a more orange-yellow that I hoped would show up more. Better, still not great, may mess with it some more. Put some shading on the underbelly (will brighten it back up tomorrow), and started on his robes with a base coat of Vallejo Red Leather on the 'under' robe and scarf thing. Also took him up to my photo rig for better pictures today.

The top robes, I may do blue, may do red. Haven't decided yet.

I've lightened the underbelly a bit, shaded and highlighted the orange robe, and put a base coat of yellow on the top robe. I was originally thinking blue for that, but...well, I changed my mind. I was concerned that blue would draw too much attention away from his head. I'm happy with these colors, so next will be shade and highlight on the yellow, then decide what to do with that belly plate (??) thing he's got.
