With the Bones Kickstarter, looking at eventually getting into Warlord. I did have a few questions, though. (I'm hoping that we'll get enough reveals for me to make a Warlord Army solely out of Kickstarter Bones.)

Which faction has the most animals in it? Would that be Telembrithil? Also, which book(s) would I need? Warlord 2.0? Savage North? Are the faction specific books required or useful?

You can actually get all of the data cards at www.reapergames.com. The answer to your question is going to depend on whether by "animal", you mean strictly those with a class of animal, or also animals like "beast", "bat", and "snake" class. If you're talking strictly animal class, the answer is Elves with three - Silvermaine, Unicorn, Hunting Cat, and Giant Eagle. Tembrithil and Crusaders each have two animals. The rest of the factions have one or zero. If you're talking the more expansive meaning of "animal", it's probably Reptus, which has ten different types of Snakes

If you're interested in something between those two extremes, go here and sort the data to match your criteria.

With the Bones KS you have just about everything in there for an actual Kargir army. Shakandara posted up a possible list in here for using the KS to supply an army. But since you asked Elves have the most animals, while Reven, Reptus and Kargir have the most humanoid animals available.

Does anybody else find it odd, by the way, that the information age has led to language becoming an oblique and imprecise tool where even the most straightforward phrasing is pored over with chicken entrails and bone tossing to divine the true meaning?

"Making a Warlord Army out of Kickstarter Bones:" Well, keep in mind that Reaper is one of the few outfits I've ever seen that wasn't picky about you using proxies.
"Animals?" Better answers than mine can be found above.
"Books?" Depends on the factions you intend to play. Warlord 2.0 includes these factions: Crusaders, Darkspawn, Elves, Dwarves, Mercenaries, Necropolis, Nefsokar, Overlords, Reptus, and Reven, along with the complete up to date rules edition.
Savage North includes the same up to date rules, as well as the Icingstead faction, Darkreach, Bloodstone Gnomes, Tembrethil, Kargir, Kragmarr, Koborlas (heavy on those K's, yes) and the Sisterhood of the Blade.

The Razig undead pirates are online only, and can be found at the Reaper Games link, above. This confused me, because the first faction I wanted to play was Razig, and I couldn't find it in any of the books.

The faction specific books aren't necessary to play the game, but they do provide considerable backstory to each faction. Most of the newer factions don't have faction books.

Hope this has been useful!

Thank you for the answers. It sounds like I'll start off with the Savage North and eventually get Warlord 2.0. As far as animals (mostly ordinary animals trained to war, I guess), is there a faction that uses war-dogs? Thought I saw hyenas somewhere, but I was looking for something... bigger. Is any particular faction easier for a beginning to paint?

Kargir uses hyenas. As for War Dogs you are looking at Crusaders.

And both Koborlas and Icingstead use wolves.

I'd say Necros and Nefsokar. Necros are undead-heavy; most of your undead can be painted with a base color, then dip, and you are done. Also, you benefit by being able to use LE minis for a large part of your army if you want to skip the painting entirely for some models (skeletal swordsmen, spearmen, archers, plus Railor, Naomi, and gargoyles).

An undead- and construct-heavy Nefsokar list would be similarly easy to paint, either via the dip method, or lots of dry brushing.

A Tembrithil list might not be too awful; the saprolings, sildorian protector, dryad, and spirit of the forest should be easy to do, as would the hunting cats. After that, however, you are looking at lots of humanoids (elves, satyrs, fauns, fairies, etc.).

A lot of the Reptus snakes lack fiddly bits, so they wouldn't be too bad for a beginner to paint either, but you might find the rest of the faction a bit daunting.

EDIT: For advice on techniques for painting armies, you might want to drop by the forum section for Speed, Army, and Tabletop techniques.
