So, anyone else see something like this:

Now, admittedly, it has been a while since I have read through The Hobbit, and while I enjoyed it more than reading The Lord of the Rings, I don't remember it being long enough to warrant three movies!! ::o:

Maybe Peter Jackson is going word for word through the book?!?

Even when there were only going to be 2 movies, Jackson said that they would be expanding on the story beyond the book. I guess that will be even more the case with 3.

I admit to having some misgivings about how far they may stray from the original story, but I'll give it a chance and see what they come up with.

SPOILER ALERT - In the first one "THE HOBBIT", brave hobbit Bilbo meets some dwarves, fights trolls, meets Gollum, kills a dragon, does some other stuff. In the second one, "THE HOBBIT 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO", a developer tries to bulldoze the Shire's community recreation center. The dwarves and Bilbo become breakdancers and have a dance contest/concert to raise some money and try to stop it. In the third film "HOBBIT 3D" (oddly enough NOT in 3D), the tricksy hobbitses build a water park with underwater tunnels and lagoons. As it prepares for opening, a young great white shark infiltrates the park from the sea, seemingly attacking and killing water skiers and park employees. Once the baby shark is captured, it becomes apparent that it was the mother, a much larger shark who also entered the park, who was the real killer. Snape kills Gandalf and Bella becomes a vampire.

I guess for me, all I can say is that the Lord of the Ring movies for me have been the only real movies that I have been very happy watching compared to the books. That is, movies like Harry Potter, Riddick, and most recently John Carter, while all decent movies when you dont consider the books, all have all been huge disappointments compared to the books just because how many shortcuts were taken to keep the movies under a time check.

Obviously, I dont like the idea of having to spend more money and wait a longer period of time to get to see the entire thing... but I think he did a good job with LOTR and believe that he should be able to do the same with this one as well.

I heard rumor of a fourth movie where Bilbo learns he was actually cloned and used in experiments to create a hybrid hobbit-orc. The Urak-lo. Bilbo manages to survive although most of his companions are slain by the monsters. One hybrid survives and skulks into a cave with a gold circlet containing data on the experiments.

... Pay no heed to proud thoughts, famous champion. Now the flowering of your strength is but for a while. After a while, the time will suddenly come that disease or the sword's edge will cut off your power. Either fire's grasp or flood's surge or blade's bite or spear's flight. Or vicious age, or the flash of your eyes will gutter and burn out! It will be all at once, great campaigner, that death will overpower you.

It's terrifying!  Without enough caffeine your body undergoes these hours of partial paralysis and hallucinations! :shudder:

Seriously though, they are expanding it by adding events that Tolkein descibed in passing both in the Hobbit and in LOTR. They will be showing the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur and the ousting of Sauron from that region from where he fled back to Mordor and remanifested, thus beginnig the buildup to the events for LOTR. I can see how that will add enough to the story to add a whole extra movie.

Some tales are better left for the light of day.

I have heard it said there will be singing in this movie; the songs from the book will play a larger part than they did in LOTR, where even Aragorn exploded into song periodically, as if Busby Berkeley was watching from the bushes. Perhaps the extra lead time will be taken up with Dwarven musical numbers.

And, again, the book lacks female characters. Is Arwen going to be back, or will someone else get Ascended Extra status?

Hell, the book's only a little over 300 pages.

Galadrial will be the main female character from what i can tell. As bearer of Nenya, she is on the White Council and one of those who ousted the Necromancer (Sauron).

So we started with 0 Hobbit movies and then had the Spanish director's version which was dropped. Jackson picked it up but then decided 1 wasn't enough and so it would be two movies. Now we have three. Hmmm anybody else notice the Fibinacci Sequence. Next week: 5 Hobbit movies for all to love and attend.

Does anybody else find it odd, by the way, that the information age has led to language becoming an oblique and imprecise tool where even the most straightforward phrasing is pored over with chicken entrails and bone tossing to divine the true meaning?

I am a cynic. I think they're doing it for the money. And I find that this article says everything about it I might have said, but funnier.

Yeah that is funny!

I am not a cynic and I can only hope that the mistakes (lack of editing) of King Kong don't crop up. I can see a very interesting expansion into where Gandalf got off to, maybe more on the alliances before the battle of five armies. My guess is the atmospherics of goblin caves and werebears will be expanded as well and none of this bothers me. I like having a movie trilogy to wait for as long as it isn't Twilight (oh yeah that is four movies isn't it).

Here's an interesting (and much more serious) article about how he's gonna do it.

What is The Hobbit without Smaug?!? That was like central to the story line. I'm not keen on Jackson introducing random new elves and then having them in some love triangle. Who gives a crap?!? :grr:

I am looking forward to it, but it throws my thoughts of the flow for a loop, I figured Bilbo/Golum would be the end of the first moveie, and Smaug would be the pinnacle with the 6 army war the end of two. Maybe the war/battle will be the culmination of 3? I would love to see some expansion on the Dwarves and Bilbo exploring the reclaimed Dwarf city!

I'm down with three. Or thirty. Just make sure some Cate Blanchette is in each one. In fact, why don't we just make the whole series about Galadriel?

Yes . . . yes . . .

And work in Winona Ryder somehow, too.

I may need a personal moment.
