There has always been something I like about the Olympics. The Opening Ceremony was wonderful and I actually watched some fencing on TV in the United States today! I am looking forward to more of the same, unique sport that is about more than making money.

Best name I have ever heard for a Sports figure - Destiny Hooker. She is on the US indoor volley ball team.

And glad Park from S. Korea got his win back in swimming.

Yep, there has always been something about the olympics... perhaps it is the stink of too much politics and nationalistic meddling. On a par with what Obummer is doing or who's Kristen Ste-wart doing...

What a joke.

The olympics: Oh, I can run faster than you. Well, I can swim faster than you. I can throw this thing farther than you. The athletes in our nation got more medals than your "h-ation" so we must be better than you... Well, you have the wrong politics so you can't compete. We're gonna protest this reason, so we're not competing anyway. Well, we'll kick you in the jimmy!

Bah!

Now, if Reaper could come out with a metal Olympic Sophie with some money going to battered women or fighting hunger or helping war refugees or any other useful endeavor, that would be interesting and heroic. I'd be into that!

Don't get me wrong, my favorite movie is/was "Chariots of Fire," but...

That's neat! I was in London over 30 years ago and I want to visit again with my wife, we've got it on the bucket list. Along with attending an Olympics event.

The first time I can recall watching the Olympics was Montreal 1976. I loved gymnastics and diving, but the closing ceremony is what I remember best.

I missed the 1980 games (wasn't the ONLY one either), but watched LA 1984 hoping it would live up to the games in '76. It came ---close---but no cigar. The boycotting had spoiled the punch enough, and watching the American athletes jumping around in their tacky Sears track suits during the parade of nations left an even worse taste in my mouth. Still the competition was fun to watch...especially getting to see Mary Lou Retton compete. THEN the Olympics came to Atlanta and that pretty much capped it. Before I had only begun to think of the event as getting-a-bit-too-commercial. After ATL I concluded that the competition and most of the nations that participated were of little to zero interest to the Olympic Committee and that the host cities seemed to be cursed to subsequent plagues of rioting (Sarajevo, Seoul, LA?)

So now we have London....and for all the stereotypes of the English as a culture of high tea, God Save The Queen and stiff upper lips, the opening ceremony looked like MTV and Las Vegas got together and had an idiot child.

I am only thankful that the Olympics "brand" has not yet tainted Special Olympics.
