Just started on the second of three minis in the Orc War Party pack.

This time around, I'm trying my hand at painting black. I want his cloak and pants to be black; so far I've glazed up the highlights using red, but I think I've gone WAY to far up. I might start over on the cloak/pants.

The shield, however is almot done. I need to add a final highlight to the wood grain. I even attempted a little SENMM on the shield. This was my first ever attempt at SENMM.

Any suggestions?

The shield looks nice. Like you say, a smooth highlight will help get the wood grain out. Try to add some on the upper edge of the shield too. You black metal looks nice too. I would probably add some rust under it. And, the desert reflection on the macaroon is a neat touch.

As for the black cloak, maybe a black wash followed by a black glaze could be an interesting idea to try.

Thanks for the feedback! I tried knocking down the highlights are you suggested, but it wasn't working out how I wanted and truth be told I wasn't happy with the red highlights anyway; they just didn't make sense to me.

So, I re-based the cloak and worked up blue highlights using a glaze. Still a work in progress on the cloak since I don't think I've gone far enough up.

Also reworked his sword and put some highlights on the chainmail. Didn't touch anything else.

Suggestions?
