(If you haven’t seen them, I think they’re great battle reports).
I’d like one of my goals to be able to create videos like that, but he’s got some great terrain and models and of course, a willing player who also has nice models. So one step at a time before I get too far ahead of myself and end up not even getting started due to dreams of grandeur.
It’s been literally 6 years since I’ve played a miniatures game. Of course during that time, “real-life” has ramped up to create some very anti-gaming conditions. But I realized there are always going to be difficulties making time and if I want to do it, there is no time like the present. Miniature skirmish games are something I know I love to play, and I think its high-time I let myself enjoy them again.
Getting into Warlord seems like it might be hard though. There is little support for the game where I’m at (or maybe my social network is just too small?), and then there is creating a game board/space to play and getting the models up and ready to go – possibly a real investment in time and energy. But really the hard part for me is that I love pretty much every faction in the first Second Edition Warlord book, and a lot in the Savage North book. I want them ALL! Conspiring forces however have left me with dwindling resources in terms of time and money, so I have to focus and choose, as I suppose nearly all of us do. My first faction is actually a no-brainer for me. It’s going to be Necropolis for the sheer fact that they have gorgeous bloodsucking vampires in them, and I think I’m going to have a lot of fun playing them.
To make sure I get going in the right direction, I’m going to make plans to get everything done. I’m also not going to do some things, like create a blog, or do a lot of photography, because I know I have limited time, and the time I do have I want to utilize for painting and playing. Of course, a blog could be fun and self-motivating, but for now…nothing except the basics.
In my dreamier moments, I have the slightly insane plan to create 200pt forces for nearly all factions. Then 500 and 1000 point forces for a few main factions. We’ll see how far I get.
The good thing about starting here is that the Reaper boards have made it easy. It’s a cornucopia of all the knowledge you could possibly want to get it together. I already know my way around a paint brush, and there is the excellent DIY thread that Doug’s Workshop posted awhile back (http://www.reapermin...dougs-workshop/) which I’m going to be borrowing from heavily.
I’m off to flesh out some plans, and assemble some models. Wish me luck!

As for collecting all the factions and such, what I might suggest is choosing factions that can be easily proxied for example, there are two different factions of dwarves (Aizen Krahl, Kragmarr), 3 elves (Taltos, Darkreach, Tembrithil), 2 orc-type (Reven, Kargir), etc... Getting models for one of those might be easily proxied for the other making them more flexible.

BunnyPuncher, get in touch with Luethar. I think that is how he spells it. He is just north of SA and trying to get started as well. Maybe you two can hook up.

One reason why people rather like to get into WHFB and 40k is the critical mass of players. You can always find someone to play. Warmachine and Hordes are now getting the same effect. Otherwise, no matter how good the game is, it will always be difficult to find players. I would advise you to build up one 1000 point army first before you move to the next. This will allow you to play several standard size games, understand the mechanics and modify the tactics according to your taste. Remember, each faction can have several tactics. You cannot own them all and love them all.
I'm gonna respectfully disagree.

I've got a gameboard 70% created. I ended up going with a portable version rather than a permanent 4'x4'table. This is so I can transport it, and make it more amenable to other members of my household.
I've got my entire Necropolis Army based, and primed. Filing off flash and basing is probably my least favorite aspect of the hobby, so with that out of the way, I think things will continue to move along nicely.
I started off painting some leader models, and I'm happy to say I finished Judas last night! I could probably sink a lot more hours into him to get him to a higher standard, but I've already well passed my quota on time for him. I am trying to stick to one hour per standard troop, and 4 hours per leader. On Judas, I think I've already put in over 10 hours. I'm working on Elsabeth, and she is proving to be challenging as well. If I have time, I'll post pictures somewhere.
I'm super-psyched that this is all coming together, and should be ready to play a self-demo to get some of the rules down.
@wildger: There are a few Warmachine/Hordes players in my area who have consistently been playing for a few years. That was attractive, but the whole steampunk world just didn't click for me when I looked at it. I can definitely see the many tactics each Warlord faction has, and I'm just focusing on models I like and hypothetical uses from reading on the boards. I think once I get into playing, I'll be able to find my style and see what fits best.
