OK, I love painting trolls. They are just really fun, whether they are ugly topless mama trolls, cute but grumpy river trolls, or beer-quaffing tavern trolls. I just love trolls! I don't know why, but they really inspire me!

So, I'm working on this LOTR Cave Troll from the Games Workshop Mines of Moria set, and the painting part is going really well so far. But there's something just blah about him. He looks, well, boring. How do I give him a kick in the pants while retaining the realistic style I'm going for here? Any ideas?

And yes, I have another WIP thread going here for St. Michael, but I've put him on the shelf for now. I'm sure when my son returns from his vacation with Grandma, he'll bug me to finish his angel, but in the meantime, Mommy is having troll fun!

The skin looks awesome so far. Maybe some green glaze would help create a toad like skin.
As the pants seems to be sewed pieces of fabrics, you could pattern some patches to create more visual attractions.

I love your other Trolls. This one may be harder to get the fun character aspect down. Keep going!

I love this mini...have a diorama built with this guy in the center. He's the only part painted! ...and I built the thing four years ago...

Skin tones on yours are brilliant! His belly has an awesome translucency to it, lots of color in there. Love it.

As for more interest...I always thought of his "pebbles," the bumps on his legs and back, as more like freckles, in a way...You've brought the pale belly color around to the pebbles, but I'd have gone with a completely different color (the version I've painted has very similar skintones, and his pebbles are a very yellowish brown). If you aren't going for LotR canon, his pebbles could actually be stones, and you can gem-stone it up a bit (though that loses some of the realism).

My last suggestion is for his eyes: yes, they're tiny, but see if you can't brighten them up a bit...show us those tiny, piggish corneas! You've managed to shade his brow-ridge beautifully, giving him a really nice "hulk smash" feel, but his eyes are so dark they almost look closed. Alternatively, you could take the dark even farther; living in a cave, he'd likely have permanently dilated pupils. But even with big pupils, I feel like he'd have "cat's eye" reflectivity going on in any light bright enough for him to be seen.

Again, your skintones are jaw-dropping. Thanks for sharing!

@Metalchaos - well, I don't want him to look very froggy, so green is not in the works, but your suggestion got me thinking..."Joy, just bite the bullet and be bold with color!" (I usually don't have to tell myself this.)

@Sanael - I went ahead and painted the eyes, just for you! And jeweled back? Haha! Funny idea, but like you said, it's not in keeping with the style of this piece.

And thank you all for your kind words and feedback!

So...dark navy blue! yellow! violet! more orange brown! And he starts coming to life!

It's true, the skin tones is amazing. There's a lot of color interacting with one another, it's just beautiful and very realistic.

yeah! This is good stuff! More contrast, more liveliness...and those eyes add a LOT of intent.

Still gawping over the belly-skin. He's coming along real purty, now.

I love the color choice for his diaper; nice contrast without pulling from the rest of him. Also digging the base color for that chain; can't wait to see that highlighted up!

Thanks for doing this WiP; as my rehearsals get more intense, my time at the paint table goes down, so I'm loving the vicarious progress!

Glad you like it! My progress will probably slow down for a while now, though. My kids were vacationing with their Grandparents, but they are coming home tomorrow. I will be happy to have them back, but it will mean less time to paint.

Wow. Nothing more to add.

Some tales are better left for the light of day.
