Excuse the base, I just started painting again after a 4 year hiatus and didn't think to do anything with the gigantic broccoli base this guy comes with when I started.

Things were pretty rough when I first started on him, by the time I was done a lot of the old tricks were starting to come back. As such, not surprised I'm pleased with the face (last thing I did) and not happy with the metallics (first thing I did). Oh well, it is good to have something done. Will spend the afternoon sawing off broccoli bases before I prime anything else :)

First. Welcome back! As for the paint job, I think he is pretty good for not painting in 4 years. After six months of not painting It seems I have to start all over again. I think the metallics came out well. The base is not that bad and the way you painted it, it goes with the figure and looks like he is standing on lava gravel. Look forward to seeing more of your stuff as you get back in.

I wouldn't be complaining if this was one of my paint jobs, it looks great especially the face. You're right that the sword is lacking and the aforementioned base but outside of that it's hard to tell this is a first time in years mini. Can't wait to see the next one.

As for the broccoli bases, they come off really easy with a saw or sprue cutter--which is what I use and it's less then 5 min to remove one.

Looks great! One thought about the broccoli bases: While it's possible to just saw them off and pin the figure onto something new (something I often do), another possibility is to build up a new base effect AROUND the "broccoli" with some putty. (I use two-part epoxy putty, such as Apoxie Sculpt or Magic Sculp(t).) For instance, you could turn the lump of broccoli into a "rocky outcropping" by building up some putty into angular rocky chunks and texturing the surface with a tool, then letting it cure, and going back and carving up the solid putty with a hobby knife for some harder edges. (I guess I would need to do some before/after pictures to show what I'm talking about; I'm not very good at painting miniatures, but at least I have a lot of fun with decorating bases. :) )
