My 12yo niece is running Labyrinth Lord for her sisters and friends. My brother and I have gotten her dice, the basic books, and she's got the mini Chessex mat she borrows from her dad.

I'm figuring what this kid needs is a basic stable of minis.

We're talking old school here, so I want to come up with some classics that she can really get some use out of. I'll probably scrounge the actual figs from things like Reaper or WOTC prepaints (maybe HQ), but I'm trying to think what the top monster types would be in terms of table time.
  • Goblins (can stand in for most humanoids, I figure)
  • Skeletons (for most undead)
  • Giant Spiders
  • Dragon
  • Bandits
  • Wolves
  • Rats
  • Evil wizard/priest
Anything else? Or anything that you think should be swapped out? I could try to get her some PC figs too, but that gets trickier, as people like those more personalized, IMO.

Well Reaper's Leg Encounters lineup has most of it not all of those in it's lineup right now.

Also take a look at Wizkids/Paizo's new prepaint line 'Pathfinder Battles' as well. The quality on those are pretty nice. A step above the Wizard figs (there aren't any bent bases for example).

I'll have to look at Paizo's.

What I'm most curious about is which creatures/monsters are the best choices for a "starting lineup."

Maybe some sort of elemental or ooze miniature would be good to have, to represent various "amorphous" monsters. Either that, or get a can of Play-Doh. :D (I've found that to be a useful-if-somewhat-silly "proxy" tool for the awkward situations where I've hosted someone ELSE'S fantasy campaign and I was depended upon to provide the miniatures, to fill in a few gaps on models I had nothing to properly represent.)

I agrees with the Peacock. Ooze miniatures are all well and good, but an egg of Silly Putty can stand in for most oozes (as well as gelatinous cubes and the like).

Only thing I'd add would be one line of large humanoids (orcs) and one line of small humanoids (goblins).

Snakes and giant bugs. Look for plastic toys at the dollar store.

Caryatid warriors can be a fun surprise.

Fairies or leprechauns.

I'd also add a few Large humanoids like Ogres as they are great for Ogres, Trolls, Giants, etc... There are a lot of 7 to 12 foot tall humanoids in fantasy.

Some tales are better left for the light of day.

Really wanna see their eyes open wide. Put down a rather large humanoid like the Reaper Cyclops or similar sized "mini". Also might add one of those plastic dragons you see at Micheals or Hobby Lobby.

Oh, don't forget the classic Unicorn and Pegasus. Maybe not as monsters, could be friendly NPCs or creatures to rescue. I'm pretty sure there's a plastic Reaper unicorn.

he he there is. I converted one into a regular horse for my ill-fated We Be Goblins game for RCon ^_^

Speakin of the good guys, didn't see elves or dwarves on there. Kind of a staple for most fantasy setting.

I like the ogre and unicorn ideas. I was avoiding NPC good guys because this was to be a very "bare bones" set. We shall see if it expands over time.

Thanks for the feedback!
