For a friend's copy of Super Dungeon Explore (gallery here: https://picasaweb.go...DungeonExplore#), I've painted up the minis, but I've also been digging through my collection for anything that looks the least bit "chibi," either for extra monsters to decorate the 3D boards we've been putting together ... or, in this case, an alternative hero. Here, I painted up Echidnox, Hedgehog Warrior (Reaper #01424 - from the "Legion of Justice and Caeke") and put it on a round base with a bit of putty to ape the style of the "dungeon blocks" on the bases that actually come with the game.

Based on the photo, I also put together an illustration to put onto a custom character card (using the template on the BoardGameGeek entry for this game), "chibi-izing" the character with those big anime eyes.

Now, the tough part will be to try to figure out how to game-balance the character. So far, my "prototype" card has an ability called "Quills," which basically copies the "Briar Armor" from the Deeproot Druid character, he has Missile 6 (to reflect the bow ... but so he won't be quite as good as the Glimmerdusk Ranger as a ranged character), and I made up an ability to "Share Caeke" as an Aura 5 "Remedy" (remove effects) for 2 action points. I suppose only playtesting will tell for sure whether it's a fair setup and doesn't step too much on the toes of the other heroes.

We've been putting together some 3D tiles for the games, incorporating a few Reaper treasure items into the decoration of "dead spots" on the boards (unplayable zones as indicated on the original tiles, decorated with "mini-dioramas" in our version). Here's a sample of one of the "gothic"-themed tiles we've put together, using Hirst Arts "Castlemolds" castings and other bits.

Super Dungeon Explore is a property of Soda Pop Miniatures and CoolMiniOrNot. Echidnox, Hedgehog Hero is a property of Reaper Miniatures. Castlemolds is a trademark of Hirst Arts.

Nicely done. I just got my first Echidnox in a trade at ReaperCon 2012, so i have not had the courage to open him and paint him yet. Looks like the entire League of Justice and Caeke heroes will work well in that game.

Looks fun. Been thinking about picking that game up. Now i have yet another reason to do so.
No two ways about it.. Han shot first.

Schweet. Nice board dressing! I also like what you did with his eyes.

Thanks! Yeah, Echidnox's original design gives him little beady dot eyes within a fairly wide area of face; I "anime-ized" the character by filling out the surrounding area with bigger eyes and turning the original beady eyes into the pupils of the much larger "chibi" eyes. I think this same trick might work with Frumitty, or possibly Platypod.

Shoatima (the only one of the lot who's actually presently available) would be a bit tougher; rather than giving him "big anime eyes," I might try for "kitsune eyes" or "grinning eyes" --> ^_^ <-- though it would require a bit of "creative painting" beyond the actual contours of the eyes of the figure.

Great use of colour and light and shadow in the terrain. I'm not a fan of the chibi stuff, but I can appreciate the effort and the results.
