My friend brought his bran new Darkreach Army at my house this week-end and we played a few games. It was exciting to have my Dwarves fight a new enemy that I had never faced before! Although everything went very well we had a difference of opinion regarding the Devious Silhouette ability from the Dark Reaches Doctrine.

The Devious Silhouette states that any Darkreach models of the elf race cannot be targeted by attack spells from farther than 12” away.

The rules concerning Attack Spells with an area of effect states: “…the caster can choose either a model or a point on the ground to be the center of the AoE.”

In my opinion it is perfectly legal for me to cast a Fireball spell in the middle of a group of Shiver Spikes if I target the ground between them even if it is 15” away. The way I see it since I am not targeting them directly and I do not exceed the range of the spell my attack should be legal. If I was using a spell like Ice Shard I could not target one of those elves since this spell targets a model directly.

Am I right?

Thanks, Dan

You would be correct in in your assessment.

The only thing that I would add to your statement is that unless the spell says otherwise, you would still need LOS to the target point on the ground.

That faction ability helps against a lot of spells, but indeed it does not protect them against all spells.

I do not have pictures of our last games, but I do have pictures from our game that we played a month ago. Phil was using my Necropolis (mix of Skeletons and Vampire) and I was playing my Dwarves. I do not remember the builds used, but I do remember it was a game of 1000 points. The thing I do remember is that the game was won on the last activation of the last game turn (6 turn game). It was an epic battle and a good example of the fact that you should never consider a Warlord game won until the very end…

It was a very fun game…

Dan

Seems the pictures are not working, sorry about that...
