This might sound funky, but is this like using NMM techniques with true metallic paints?

It's kinda like NMM with true metallics, but it's basically ilke this:

Basecoat with metallic color
Shade with non-metallic color (usually dark, but not always)
Re-apply base coat in some spots
Highlight with brighter metallic color(s)
