Hey all,

Just wondering what techniques you guys use for painting stone bases. I guess I'm referring to stone tile, flagstone, etc.

Myself, I've been starting with a white base and covering it with black and brown washes. I then drybrush a bit with light colours. It turns out OK, but probably not as good as it could be.

Hopefully I'll have some pictures for y'all as soon as I can get my hands on a camera.

You should look at the painting tips on the Hirst models website. I find them really helpful. Obviously it's much smaller but the idea is still good. The lava one was especially cool.

Well it depends on the type of stone you want. Just having browns and grays is rather boring for the eyes so try adding some blue red or orange washes.

If you do a google image search you'll see that these are colors that are common in flagstones or cobble stones and you can alternate washes for the rocks and then use the same colors for the highlights.

MonkeySoth has some excellent advice! Not long ago I fought with a rock base and it drove me crazy. The highlights and shadows were very nice but it was all the same color and same highlights and shading from top to bottom.

Went back added some blue, purple and green washes. Also used a weathering technique by mixing green powdered pigment with rubbing alcohol (because the alcohol evaporates more rapidly than water, you get a really cool effect). I randomly hit with it different rocks here and there. Then followed that up with a small amount of red pigment mixed with alcohol and applied in different spots.

Every wash or pigment application, I really made myself switch up application intensity and which rocks got hit with the stuff.

After awhile I had a decent base. Nothing drop dead fantastic but it was a heck of a lot better than before and at least it wasn't the same from top to bottom left to right.

Awesome replies! Sure, warhorse, if you stumble across the pics and have a chance to post them, I'd love to see an example of what you mean. If not, that's ok too--I'm working on my own as we speak. ;)
