Which faction is for me?

I'm beginning to collect some Reaper figs and am trying my hand at fantasy painting. I want to pick up Warlord and I'm not sure where to go. I'm coming from Battletech, so I have experience with tactics based games, but I can't decide on a faction, or three, to collect first.
Can someone give me a run-down of how all the factions handle? Ya know, the general stuff, basic tactics, tricks, strengths/weaknesses.
Thanks in advance.

My primary faction will be Dwarves. And then I will probably collect Reven. Beyond that, I'm deciding between Elves and Reptus, but I'm leaning towards Reptus.

Here is what I would suggest...
Now that you have chosen a few factions that "look" good to you, now its time to...
First, let us know what area of the world you are located so hopefully there will be someone on here that is in your neck of the woods to give you a demo or two.
Second, As others have said, just about every faction can play multiple styles. All factions have their own version of brute force, finesse, combined arms, magic, etc... They each just have a slightly different take on how they achieve those tactics. This is mainly accomplished thru slightly different degrees of special abilities within each faction, the spellbooks used within, the faction doctrines, etc... so..... with Reaper's great proxy rules, I would suggest that you play a few games with those 3 that you have chosen, literally using your battletech minis or any fantasy based minis that you do have, to get a feel for the game, learn the special abilities, and the spellbooks, so that you can get a better idea of how each faction might play out.
Third, now with a few games under your belt, now you have an educated base to make your decision on with which to use to spend the money...

My wife may weigh in and decide on Elves as a second choice because she likes Elves.

I like Dwarves. Always my first race of choice back when I played DnD. And a lot of my favorite characters from LotR are Dwarves.

Dude I like you. I actually play Battletech with Humansquish up there and he has VERY recently converted me. Of course the Dwarves of this game helped. HEHE

I love Battletech and tactics games. I recently gave FoG a shot and decided that I'm not a large army painter. Each mini is a work of art and love, and you can't do that with mass army games. So my feet are planted firmly now on getting Reaper Minis.

This is why I prefer smaller skirmish games as well. After painting 5000 points worth of Warhammer Orcs and Goblins, only having to paint twenty or thirty dudes is a refreshing change of pace.
Plus I get undead pirates and get to say "Yarr!" a lot.
