An aardvark, a kangaroo, and a koala walk into a bar...

With this WIP, I am going to try to earn the scainter label by painting my first sculpts. At first, I was really excited about painting these guys, but as I started cleaning them I started noticing little things here and there that I wish I had done a bit differently, etc... Normally when cleaning a mini I just mumble something about the sculptor and move on without another thought, but now I'm actually the one who's liable for every imperfection. The little German in me is screaming. (This comes from a conversation at work when I mentioned that I have a little voice in my head that won't let me stop painting until a mini is perfect. One of my co-workers dubbed this voice my "Little German," and it has been a running gag ever since.)

I am actually painting a set of these for my wife and one for my boss at work, both of whom have been very supportive of my sculpting aspirations. So I will be doing two at a time.

I'm going to start with the Kangaroo, painting it as a red kangaroo (though it is really more of a hybrid between the red and the Eastern Grey).

I spent this hour base coating. The body is Chestnut Brown, the limbs are Stained Ivory, the face is Shadowed Stone, and the points and eyes are Walnut Brown. All of this will be lightening considerably before this is done.

As always, comments and questions are welcome.

TaleSpinner I want to be like you when I grow up. Crap...I'm already an adult. Great job on these so far. Look forward to seeing the rest. Also kudos on the sculpting.

Excellent sculpting! Looks to me like you're well on your way to being a scainter. ::):

They are kind of looking rough at this point. I'm having a bit of a hard time pulling off what I see in my head. I'm basically highlighting now.

I'll add the paint combos tomorrow; I'm wiped right now.

So far, so good! You are definitely doing the kangaroo justice, and I'm sure the imperfections you see are invisible to anyone else! And even if they are real, this is your first published sculpt, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Personally, I think they're fantastic!

So the Roos are done. I ended up not writing down what all I did as I just got into the groove and forgot to document. Sorry. They took me a combined total of 4 hours.

On to the Aardvarks:

Hour 1:

AV-1.jpg

AV-2.jpg

Everything was based in Muddy Dirt. Then I based the head and tail in Khaki Shadow. I did two highlight layers on the body:

H1: Muddy Dirt/Basic Dirt
H2: Basic Dirt

Many more layers to go...

Have a good night.

Hour 2:

av2-1.jpg

av2-2.jpg

I continued highlighting the body as follows:

H3: Basic Dirt/Brown Sand
H4: Brown Sand
H5: Brown Sand/Driftwood Brown
H6: Driftwood Brown
H7: Driftwood Brown/Terran Khaki

I likely have at least two more layers to do before moving on to highlight the face and tail.

One thing that is really showing now is the divot on it's left side. I foolishly thought I could ignore that, but now I see it will need putty. I'll have to take a painting break tomorrow and sculpt instead so I can fill that in before continuing.

Hour 3:

AAV3-1.jpg

AAV3-2.jpg

More fur highlighting:

H8: Terran Khaki
H9: Khaki Highlight

I also painted the face and tail in the Khaki triad (though the face needs some smoothing out yet. Then I painted the eyes with Brown Liner and a Linen White reflection dot.

I finished the hour painting the claws with the mid and high tones from the body.

These are turning out nice too. I like the tan highlights on the fur.

Say, isn't bad karma to paint your own sculpts?

Can't be too bad...Derek does it all the time and look how his minis turn out.

Hour 4 to 5: Final

To finish it off, I smoothed out the face with some Khaki glazes, added a pinkish glaze to the inside of the ears, painted the ground with the Mud Triad, dark lined with Brown Liner, and added the buffalo grass.

I'll start the koalas tomorrow. Hopefully, I can get them done soon as I really want to get back to my current sculpt.

On to the Koalas:

Hour 1:

Hour1.jpg

This is probably the furthest base coat I've done from where I envision the final mini to end up. Bear with me, this is just the deep shadow layer at this point:

Body: Blue Liner (will be grey)
Belly: Sandy Brown (will be creamy white)
Tree: Walnut Brown
Leaves: Forest Green
Base: Chestnut Gold
