Greetings all,

Well, I've finished several sculpts now and figure it is about time I get back to painting for a while. I haven't painted anything since last winter and haven't done a painting WIP here since last November. I've got to keep up both skills if I am going to earn the Scainter title. I also have a new friend who wants to learn to paint so I'll be teaching her during our lunch hours at work.

For my first piece back in the saddle, I thought I'd do Derek's Roderic Ambermead and Glitter, Halfling on Dragon. I love this sculpt. It has a wonderful innocence and beauty to it. This will also be my first DKS sculpt, and I'm looking forward to exploring Derek's sculpting style.

So far I've just prepped the mini and have it ready for priming:



I plan on painting the dragon as a Copper as it fits almost perfectly into what I feel copper dragons look like. I'll likely start pushing paint around next week, though we are still waiting for my friend to get her mini from the FLGS. I may start on the dragon early though as her's is a human an will be more analogous to Roderic than to Glitter.

I'll be watching this closely. How do you polish the mini so shiny? I can usually manage only to file off mold lines and sand the broad, easy-to-reach areas. Prep is one area I definitely need to improve.

I use a Dremel for mold line removal, first with a carbide bit, then a needle point diamond, and then polish it with a rubber point. Then I clean it all with simple green and a toothbrush. With as many minis as you do, you should really invest in a Dremel and the right bits. It will save you a lot of time over the files.

By the way, Joy, one I get the dust shaken off with this mini, I may just be up for our postponed ladder challenge.

EDIT: Found out what it was. "Bio Green Clean" is what the radio host was presenting.

Simple Green is the Army's cleaner of choice, and if it cleans well enough for the army trust me, it works for stripping paint and cleaning minis ;). That being said I can't WAIT to see what you do with this!!

I sure wish I had a friend to paint with every day at lunch! Maybe I'd stop eating at my desk and take a break for once. ;) Good luck to your friend as well!

Hello~ Thought I'd poke my head in and give you all a name to go along with Andy's mysterious friend from work~ ^___^ I'm very excited to get painting and i hope that darn mini gets here soon!

About the shiny - I use rubberized polishing points and cylinders in my dremel to shine up my minis too, and I love them. It's a little trick I learned from some old Cinder dragon WiP I saw around here once upon a time... :o) I have some diamond bits too & agree they definitely do save time on mold lines, but I still rely on my files a fair bit in tight spots where I don't trust myself not to slip with the dremel.

The polishing bits give a really smooth surface to work with and remove unsightly scuff marks from filing very well, which is great since you pretty much eliminate the chance of having a grainy looking finished piece (barring unfortunate priming/thinning mishaps). The only downside is that sometimes you get a glaring shine-line on the sides of legs etc. that can look a lot like missed mold lines but aren't. Except when they are... I think I got mine from Widget Supply (online), but it was several years ago so I'm not 100% sure about that.

I'll be watching this one progress for sure - TS's projects never fail to impress!

Hour 1:



Well, Boussole's mini arrived and we had our first painting lunch today. It was very fun. I'm not used to having someone to paint with. She's starting her own WIP, so I'll just post what I did.

Basically, I just got Rodderic's eyes done, base coated the flesh in Rosy Shadow, the shirt in Chestnut Gold, and the cape in Muddy Olive. I messed up the left eye totally and had to start over, so I didn't get as far as normal, but, that's life. This is my first DKS sculpt and so far I really like the way derrick does his eyes; very easy to paint, even as small as they are on this halfling.

I don't think we'll have another session until Friday as we have lunch meetings tomorrow and an appointment on Thursday.
