I'm telling myself not to get into the miniature world of fantasy terrain and all the wonderful props it offers -- besides of course small props like altars and candelabras and columns and statues and stuff -- but isn't it just awesome what scenes people (mainly wargamers) can create?

A few links out of many that just blow my mind that I got from a link page:

http://www.dwarvenforge.com/ (I've known about this one for a while.)
http://www.manorhouse.cc/gall-diorami-fantasy.asp
http://www.terranscapes.com/

Now, I'm not some kind of salesman or whatever and I don't in any way endorse any of those sites; I've never bought the first model house or hedge or ruined cathedral or anything from anyone. Just expressing my amazement at just now learning about this part of the hobby. I had no idea what these artists could do until last night. Wow.

Just thought I'd share. ::):

Those are some fine links. Some gamers are willing to game with just about anything for terrain, while others (like me) put a good bit of effort into their terrain. Neither group is wrong, it just depends on what part of the hobby the prefer to focus on. Building a fun scenario with a nice looking terrain board is something a really enjoy doing.

I would also suggest that you explore the option of building your own terrain. It's more time consuming, but cheaper. For that, I recommend Hirst Arts A word of caution - Hirst Arts stuff can be very addicting.

I'm a terrain junky. I put way more effort into, and am subsequently way better at, building and painting terrain, than I am at painting minis.

Converting and modifying minis, and the accompanying basework, I'm great at. Because those skills are copacetic to terrain building. Which I love.

I just love building terrain. For cryin' out loud.

Did I mention I love terrain?

Yes, Bruce Hirst's stuff is a perfect start if you're just discovering the addictive hobby of making small landscapes, and his site is a wealth of information. I personally started out scratch building before I ever stumbled upon his site. But there's no denying the man's experience can be a gigantic boon to the hobbyist.

Oh man. That's why I don't actually count how many I have. I do know it's enough I had to make a web page to keep track of them.

And if you don't think Rastl's 34 is a challenge, I can count all the ones I have.

Castlebuilder, I'd be very surprised if you did not have ALL of them.

21 is enough for me. For now.

For the original poster... with careful selection you can do a lot with a single mold, from walls and ruins to entire buildings or dungeon layouts. It's slower, but more economical.

When people ask about my dungeon layout, I normally tell them that they could build something just as cool with four or five molds. If you made/came up with other things for decoration, you could do it easily with just two or three.

Honestly I use a handful of my molds extensively and the rest for special builds. Of course I'm always one piece short on every build, no matter how much I cast.

For those who don't believe me, here's my list.

I love terrain as well. I went a different direction though and mostly use cardstock models for props and terrain. Primarily I use World Works Games products. Only have 2 hirst arts molds and they are just for props.

If you want to try out some free card stock models you can check out these.
