3 Mossbeards?????

I gotta say that 3 DR2 heavy hitters like that would seriously make me consider throwing in the towel before I even started....

Any thoughts on game balancing against this list?

Mossies are awesome for sure. But, nothing is unbeatable. Look at its weaknesses. It has massive damage causing swings. But, it only has 2 of them. And the bludgeon only works on offense. Its DV, while good, is not unhittable even by the smaller MAV models.

So, with that, the answer looks towards models with lots of swings, or extra damage causing themselves. You spread out til limit his offense but not too far that you cant swarm him once he has done his move. Also combined arms. Remember the DR resets each activation, but if you can do even a single point via a spell like Ice Shard, and another single point with ranged attacks, then all melee done in the same turn goes straight to damage.. Not saying its easy, just saying there are different tactics to take.

Stubb is right. DR/2 models like Mossbeard can be a right pain to deal with but if you focus firepower on them they fall fairly easily. The whole point is to put as much damage on them at once while minimizing damage taken in return.

Model states like Stunned, Disabled, and Cursed are huge when attacking such large models. Send in a disable model after hitting him with an Ice shard or some other effect that stuns and you will face almost no retribution for your assault. This is why it's important to have versatility in a pitched battle list. That being said, 3 mossbeards is a nasty proposition! ::):

Not a bad build, Vince. I had actually been thinking of decreasing the amount of archers with this build to put more grunts in there. The only thing I would look at to maybe try as a slight variation would be adding another hunting cat per troop (working the numbers to, at least). Not that I'm in love with them or anything but having Disable and Savage paired with a warrior or swordsman can be nasty. Also, I noticed you switched the warriors to swordsman. I assume that's because the cost and being able to field more models, correct? All in all, good thoughts that I will play with.

Yeah. Let's face it, the focus of the build is the Mossbeards. The trick then is it to counter all the things that Jason and Josh were mentioning so that the Mossies can be effective. Beefing up the number of soldiers in the list helps prevent the Mossies from being swarmed too easily. The list is hardily invincible, but no list should be. It should be plenty painful to face, when played with the right tactics.

Yeah, I'm hoping I can talk Jeff into a middle of the week "testing" session and see how it works out. If we do, I'll let you know.

So after ultimately deciding to use my Merc list for the RCon tournament this year, here's the list I strongly considered using instead. If all of my Elven models had been finished being painted in time, I probably would have used it. The concept for the list is highly similar (using synergy of FAs, WAs, and SAs to maximize damaged potential while minimizing defensive strike opportunities).

Elves - 1000 points

Troop 1
Prince Danithal
Caerwynn
Magic Ranged Weapon
Lysette
Vale Swordsman x 4
Hunting Cat x 4
Luck Stone

Troop 2
Gildan, Vale Ranger
Vale Swordsman x 5

Troop 3
Gildan, Vale Ranger
Vale Swordsman x 5

Troop 4
Gildan, Vale Ranger
Vale Swordsman x 5

Troop 5
Gildan, Vale Ranger
Vale Swordsman x 5

Troop 6
Silvermaine, Unicorn

Troop 7
Giant Eagle

Totem of Battle

The idea here is to dovetail the Swordmen's Swift Attack with the Elven FA to gain the +1 DV and +1 MAV while doing so. This boost to MAV, plus the totem and support, help feed the Cleave SA that the swordsmen have, making it more like that they will hit for 2 wounds instead of 1. Even the Eagle gains the benefit of that trick. Danithal's WA works nicely with the #MA 3 Gildans as well. There is just enough speed, magic, and ranged to help keep your opponent honest while you use the 30+ melee models to ground and pound.

If I can come up with 20 swordsmen and 4 Gildans I may try this next month. How do you think it will work on skeletons?

Another option would be to add some standards to give them a dicipline boost so that when they get into B2B they can break more easily.

I'd think the list would fare pretty well against something heavy with Skellies, especially if you can use the unicorn and eagle to take out whatever heavy hitters your opponent might have on the table. A skelly horde might out-number you, but it shouldn't be by much. Denying them the ability to kill you (hit-and-run with a 2 DT model vs. a 1 DT model should prove to be no match), you should be able to easily swing the numbers back in your favor in just a few activation cards.

Regarding standard, with Swift Attack, they won't need it to break B2B, at least not as part of their action. I figure with the number of troops, you will have a reasonable chance to control flow in engaging with the Swift Attacks at the correct time. With nearly 40 models, rarely will you be outnumbered, so there shouldn't be too much cause to have to break to engage somewhere else. Plus, with 5 troops of melee models, you'd burn 75 points to put standards in them all. But hey, whatever works for you! It certainly would provide even more of a "hit and run" feel to the list.

Hi Guys,
I'm completely new to Warlord and I am just thinking about starting Elves as my friends picked Reptus, Nefsokar, Necropolis and Crusaders as their default race.

I read this article and came to the following conclusion as we play 750P max.:

Elves - 750 points

Troop 1
Larnach the Grey
Caerwynn
Peruhain, Elven Monk
Hunting Cat x 2
Vale Long Thorn x 2
Royal Guardsman x 3

Troop 2
Meridh
Vale Swordsman x 5
Hunting Cat x 2

Troop 3
Silvermaine, Unicorn

Troop 4
Mossbeard the Treeman

I'd like some c&c to this list. Tactic is to take down dangerous models via caerwynn and larnach while they are guarded by the rest of the troop. Perishuan is there to heal and buff mossy. Troop 2 is going to hunt damaged and soft-targets as I hope to find some smaller groups in that hard multiplayer fights and shall support mossy. Unicorn is destined to stab any solo models like mages.

This looks like a really solid army for the 750 point level, you were able to pack in a lot of diversity and power, so you should be well prepared for most situations. Welcome to the game!

Hey Guys,
after winning three of three Games with my Elves I plan to try a 1000P List.

C&C for this pls:

Elves - 999 points

Troop 1
Larnach the Grey
Caerwynn, Magic Ranged Weapon
Royal Guardsman x 4
Niriodel

(Larnach teleporting, casting damage spells, barrage etc.;Caerwynn shall pick out seargents, caster etc.; niriodel support for the mossies)

Troop 2
Chiral, Centaur
Centaur Warrior x 3
Hunting Cat x 2
Armor of Courage

(Mossie is the bait and the Centaurs will charge the less protected Warlords etc :)

Troop 3
Mossbeard the Treeman
(Twin Towers! They'll get much attention from the enemy and some support of me like teleport/heal)

Troop 4
Mossbeard the Treeman

My successful list was:

The only criticism I'd make is that the list is composed almost entirely of models that are expensive for their role, which translates in to low model count. Caerwynn and the casters are great, but if you can't tie up the enemy and prevent them from penetrating deep into your ranks, then they don't last long. Mossies are great - like any other DR/2 model - until them get swarmed by superior numbers.

I'm not saying that the list can't (or won't) be effective, but against the wrong list or if your tactics aren't sharp, it will be easy to get buried.

I'd seriously consider trading caerwyn for lysette. This coupled with the council doctrine and you can dominate in the field of magic.
Casting two mind blasts at CP 9 is sick.
Your list looks tough but specialising a little more will make it brutal.
Good luck
I shall return
