I followed these exact directions to make mine. Excellent price:effectiveness ratio, and the end result is sturdier than you'd think to boot.

Made this myself last week. Still tinkering with the best lighting intensities, directions, and warmth/cool spectrums, but really pleased with the potential.

Has anyone tried making a light box from stretched canvases? I'm just curious if the fabric is too thick to appropriately diffuse the light.

I bet even the thinnest canvas would be too thick, but I suspect there are other fabrics that would be ideal for that kind of light box. One design I've seen uses a white bed sheet, and the store-bought models use what looks like rip-stop tent fabric. Another suggestion would be to check your fabric shop for sheer curtain material.

Try tulle. You can get rolls inexpensively from bridal shops (though that grade is so sheer that multiple layers might be necessary) or you can hit a fabric store.

Built mine this weekend using a white bedsheet my wife gave me permission to destroy. One thing that I have found out is that it is really tough to get a good photo using a white background. If you're having issues, try using a darker background. I'm going to the crafts store this afternoon to pick up some other shades to experiment on.

When photoing something darker on a white background you usually wind up overexposing the background to get a good exposure on the subject.
You can use a light to medium gray background if you want a white-looking background. That way you can expose for your subject without totally blowing out the background.
The best place to find backgrounds for mini photos is in the scrapbook isle. There's lots of choices of papers that you can buy by the sheet and the prices are low enough that you can get several to experiment with.

I want to move to Theory. Everything works in Theory.
Somtimes I think the hardest thing I do all day is getting out of bed.

Finally got around to making my box today - totally awesome! I used a white t-shirt and it seems to work just fine. Now I just need to tweak some settings, see if I can bump up my photo-fu skills to the next level. Just using the light box is a HUGE leap for me, so thanks for finding and sharing this how-to.
