Here is the '07 Christmas list...I have a couple I hope to get done before the 25th. We'll see...
The first is an angel for my mom. The Garrity eyes have been giving me fits, but I got at least the right one satisfactory. I am using the tanned skin triad up through linen white for the highlights, along with a hint of clear plum on the lower cheeks to give that "distanced" trick. The lips are tanned skin mixed with VMC calvary brown. Hair still needs a fair bit more to go, but its the shield brown triad up through driftwood brown/linen white 1:1 and deep shading with blue liner (thanks Aaron!). The robe is just basecoated (and not completely at that) with linen white and then VMC ivory. The gray sash and base are just primered with a mix of RMS black primer and VGC white primer; they play well together and I think you would get a similar effect with the RMS white primer. I have been trying the gray primer as of late and kind of like it at the moment.

The wings are chestnut gold/palomino gold/buckskin pale shaded with chestnut brown and highlighted up through linen white, at the moment. I'll probably take it up to pure white and may go a little heavier on the white overall; not sure about that. I do like the interplay of colors with this particular set...

As always, hit me hard with the critiques! I have tried to expand my techniques a bit with the coloring (particularly the use of "cold colors" for shading) and would be interested to hear what everyone thinks.

The second will be for my fiancee and is Alastriel--I'll try and get some decent pics in the next few days.

Glad to see some more stuff from you Jabber, as you have always been an inspiration for me.

Those wings are coming out really nicely, and the overall color scheme is working really well together.

I have this one I painterd up a while back for my daughter, really nice sculpt on it.

I agree, the color on the wings in very cool, nice job on them. The face and hair look really good as well.
The eyes do look a bit off as you mentioned, If I remember I had alot of trouble with them as well. Had to make them really small to fit the sculpt or they didnt look right.

Those wings are absolutely beautiful! She certainly is a great choice for a Christmas project. Her hair is also coming along nicely.

the wings are really lovely! What are you going to do with the sash and robe, ultimately? Because if it's gray and white, I'm afraid the wings will overpower the model a bit!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I really appreciate it. I guess I'll be sticking with the coloring on the wings ::):.

Jubilee--the sash is just primered at this point--I was leaning toward a dark green for it--thoughts, anyone? As far as the robe goes, it has a ways to go yet. Personally, I find it easier for white to start bright and shade down as opposed to trying to go from darker to lighter. At the moment, I still need to get the basecoat on completely; there is some gray primer peeking through in spots and with the gray primer on the sash, the white is much colder than I am wanting. I'll be shading with the ivory triad and just a hint of brown (earth brown or shield brown I am thinking) to try and give the robe a "warm white" color. I could take it down a bit to say creamy ivory as the basecoat color. I had fiddled with stained ivory initially as a basecoat but found it too dirty yellow-ish for what I was wanting. The cloud itself will be a colder white, with some ghost white shading, going into a sky blue for deeper shading and then a medium blue on the base itself.

Nice one Jab, I hope you are adding the blue to the color your using and not just by itself!! Cuz then it just looks blue!! I would second your comment about bringing the highlights up a bit (just in certain areas) of the hair to give it a little more pizzaz. I think you can go two routes with the dress and sash. If you go warm, I would go warm with both which will be interesting with the green...or you can go cool with both which may fit the colors you chose a little better. That in turn will be offset by the incredibly warm wings. Which are smoken hot by the way!. And would make for a very eye catching piece. Now if you really want to go for a color explosion...Do the sash in a rich purple, for the dress do the shadows in a greyish purple and tint the highlights of the dress with yellow (this is just the faintest hint of yellow by the way). So dress, white...highlights yellow...shadows purple. I would keep that cloud at the bottom dark so that it doesn't compete with the model. In fact I think it would be cool to saturate your colors as you move down the model. In other words the further you get fromt he wings and the face, the darker the model is. This can be done with really thing glazes of your darker colors done completely over the highlights and shadows. It doesn't have to be a drastic color change either, just the hint of things getting darker.

And.....this is why I almost never do minis for Christmas--must...paint...faster... I am scrambling to get this angel done and Alastriel is completely out of the picture. Sigh...
I went with the cool green triad of pine/leaf/pale green highlighted with clear yellow. I added some more highlighting to the hair. The base is ghost white, highlighted to pure white and shaded with VMC Sky Blue, Medium Blue, Intense Blue. The transitions are very rough, but meant to be so. I can't get the robe to photograph well at all and I think it's throwing the balance of the whole picture completely out of whack. It is Linen White shaded with Creamy Ivory triad. Hopefully I can get this done tonight...we are celebrating Christmas a bit early this year, so I'll be heading out tomorrow afternoon.

Hehe, I finally managed to figure out my camera's white balance...
I like this photo considerably better--the robe is much truer to life. She still needs some more shading in the deep recesses, but I am alot more satisfied with her.

Hey it looks great all together. I think your right about darkening some of the shadows in the white robe but other than that it looks pretty cool. Usually I am not a big fan of painting the edges of the base any color but black but in this case I kinda like it...you may want to touch up the bottom edge on the back though, it looks like the paint got scraped a bit.
