Well, below you will see my 3rd round entry piece in the Wyrd Games Iron Painter 2007 contest. We had two weeks to finish. The theme was "Seeing Red". I had a few relly really cool ideas. But, finances would not let me make any purchases at the time so, I could not do any of tose cool ideas. So, instead I had to choose a mini from my current inventory and try my best to make it work. I don't know how well my paint job does in terms of the theme, but I am very happy with my paintjob.

And even more happy with my Jester-esque speed at which I was able to finish it. I did this whole thing in about 17 hours over 6 days compared to my normal 2 months. Now, granted 17 hours would insult Jester, but for me that is blinding speed.

Included in this were a bunch of firsts for me:

First time actually sculpting with greenstuff - the monolith
First time to do a weapon swap conversion - sword to the flag
First time painting on canvas - related to minis anyway
First time freehanding

The scene depicts Warlord Captain Count Lorenth on steed sitting on top of a ridge overlooking a battlefield, spurring his trops on with the Flag.

Anywho, cleaned up the pictures a little and tossed em up on CMON. If you feel like giving a vote, here is the link, otherwise comments and critiques are also always welcome.

Thanks for looking.

Fine job Stubbs!!!

I really like how the base looks and the paint job is very good. I think your freehand turned out good as well.

17 hours for a turn out like this is very good IMO.

I like it Jason; I think you did well with what you had, even after we talked about some of those ideas. I'd like to see a look at Lorenth's other side.

I'm not totally in love with the direction you went with the monolith; I think it came out to bright in comparison to the rest of the piece. It keeps drawing my eye away from the rest of the fine details. The sculpting itself is nice; I like the incorporation of the O'lord symbol in the monolith... just maybe white wasn't the direction to go.

Still, very cool. I love the banner. :)

Excellent piece Stubb, I agree about the monolith being a tad bright and drawing attention away from the fig. Also my other gripe would be the super-sized banner. It just appears to be too big to be carried with any kind of ease. That much cloth is extremely heavy let alone if there is anykind of wind or god forbid it ever got wet.

Anywho, the red / gold colors and the freehand is great love the detail on the flag.

Thanks all for the feedback. The Monolith is this white because it is suppose to be giving off a glow. But, I agree that the camera picked it up a little too much.

I can say there are several things that if I had more time to tinker and do, I would change, but for the contest that is the Iron Painter where you only have two weeks to come up with your idea, get the materials, and finsih your paintjobs (and throw in the added bonus of being a holiday week and going out of town) just didnt have the ability to do any changes this go round.

I do plan on going back after this contest is over and doing a few of those changes.

@Shak,
If you want to see the back side, then you will have to go look at the the pictures I turned in for the contest (done at 3 in the morning before changing backdrops). You can follow this link to see them: wyrd-games.net/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1913

By itself I was really happy with my shadow side of the horse, but after putting it on the base and taking the pictures and such, I noticed that I did not go near dark enough on the shadow side. So, that is another thing that will get reworked later.

Good job, especially for 17 hours. Fantastic freehand, but my first impression was that the red seems to be too red for my taste. At the contest picture there is a view of the backside of him and that kind of red I like much more. Seems that your camera has two different adjustments "strong" and "neutral" can it be??

Great job at the monolith too, but I also agree that it distracts from the miniature, it is hard to look at the miniature and NOT at the monolith, lol. The rest of the base looks great I think without the monolith there has been more of some kind of heroic atmosphere, if you know what I mean. Sometimes less is more, but neverthless I think one should see all the ambitious efforts you made at this piece. Good luck for the contest :-)

Vhaidra,

I painted the off side of the horse darker, as if in shadow. That is why it shows different. I added a drop of blue liner into each color painted on the off side.

And I wanted the on side to be bright and bold red with the bright vivid golds, as it was lit up from the monolith.

Thanks for the comments.

I think it looks good, but my only complaint would be that I can't paint like that. Congrats on making it to round 3!

Very cool work...

The notion of red and gold on the night makes me giggle - as I think of Iron Man... which is just an extra layer of cool IMO.

Great stuff - thanks for sharing.

Very cool work on the Knight and his armor. I like the basing and work you did on the monolith, cool idea with the glow but it did come out bright in the pic.

Good job on the banner as well, just seems a bit big though IMO. Still, excellent work on it

@ all: Thanks for the feedbackmuch appreciated.

@ tanker: When I do go back and rework this paintjob to darken up the shadow side, I was thinking about cutting down the flag to only be the red triangle and lose the gold there, or atleast cut it way back. What do you think about that idea?

I think that would definatly help IMO. The painting on it looks great, it just seems big for the mini is all.
Hate to say it but if I was in this situation I would probably just do a new on. Perhapes a narrow long penant type one stretched out behind like its fluttering in the breeze type of thing. May also help add a sense of forward motion to the mini.

When ever I start changing things that I have already finsihed like in this situation they never come out very good because I'm still constrained by the origonal design trying to make the mods fit in. Does that make sense? I would rather just start from scratch on something.

Hope that helps stubb
