I'm leaning towards building up a small CAV force (what can I say, I like big stompy mechas). Figured I'd start this up the same way I started up Warlord, build a Freelancer army first.

Now the catch, I know next to NOTHING about CAV. I've been lurking in some of the threads here, but without more knowledge of the rules it's like reading Latin. I played in two small demos (only one of which was an actual battle), but that was before the new rules.

I like using units that can move and fire, hit and run, things like that, with a few heavies for support. I know that there are infantry, tanks, and such also, so I'd probably use some of them for more mobile fire support. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you want to play Ritterlich! The Lightning Warfare Doctrine allows you to turn any cheap Open Faction model into a fast mobile unit and we have the best SuperHeavies in the game! We're not half bad with tanks either.

Ritterlich will probably be what my Mercs expand out into (just like my Warlord Freelancers expanded into Nefsokar...then Overlords...and Necropolis).

I know CAV has similar Freelancer rules (Independents?), do they work the same way?

I also noticed that there's True Scale models of tanks, airships, and such. Does it matter if I use the True Scale or not?

Nope, doesn't matter at all.

Great. I'll probably mix and match. The True Scale Air-APC (don't remember the name) is too cool for words.

Last question: do CAV Freelancer rules operate the same as Warlord's, or am I right in that it's whatever Free Market warmachines you can get and only 25% Faction?

That's one of their Doctrines. Their other doctrine limits them to only Open Affiliated Models, but allows them to have as many Specialist Sections as they want, so you can build your Sections pretty much however you want.

...sorry, i am opposed to orc-mindedness unless bred into form and compact power and lead by a powerful wizard who wishes to modernise his crappy setting written by a prudish academian (at least once an energetic kiwi lets him do so!)...might never makes right.
Ritterlich...well, who cares about the pasties....
Terrans: at least they have the hutzpah to clean up after themselves...
and yes, humans are the scariest thing around...think about it.
Adon: sex appeal, yes, but do they have the oomph to back it up?

Oui mon frere..the Terrans ARE the scariest thing out there. Terrans have the most flexible troop composition rules with their faction Special Abilities. With the Air Superiority doctrine Terrans are capable of fielding two sections of aircraft for every primary section they have and recieve a completely free air strike every turn. With the Artillery superiority doctrine you recieve a free artillery strike every turn and ALL your models recieve the ability to "call-in" purchased strikes.

The Terrans are pretty much the only faction NOT bent on conquering the galaxy but are more than capable of defending their interests whenever attacked. The Terrans were the last race to be introduced to the galaxy and in a relatively short period of time have proved themselves to be the equal or better of the most elite troops any race can field. The Rach tried to exterminate the Terrans a whie ago and though they fought their way to Earth they were thrown back and have acknowledged the Terrans as a worthy foe.

In all fairness i wouldn't describe the Rach as being Orc-minded. They are evolved from a predatory species as opposed to us being evolved from simians. They are aggressive by nature but self-destructively so. They value honor and glory in personal combat and rumor has it write some beautiful poetry. Think of the Rach more as Klingons/Andorians/Mongols than Orcs.

As for the elv..I mean Adonese.. They very accidentally turned out not unlike the Minbarri from Babylon 5 with a little Vulcan/Romulan thrown in.

The Ritterlich ..well I agree, who cares. They're pretty cool actually.

The Templar mean well but are misguided.

The Malvernis? *sigh* Their government is a theocracy and the cult of Khardullis controls the entire society. The Terrans are sick and tired of them trying to infiltrate and convert Terrans to their religion.

Strengths of the Adonese: they have the best indirect fire in the game, though the Terrans compete with them a bit. I personally like their faction models a lot; the Dragoon is probably one of the tougher tanks in the game, and all of their limited units have very nice models to go with them--the Ogre, the Mantis, the Chancellor...

They also have the Fire and Fury Warfare doctrine, which makes their electronics very dangerous. With a 6" radius, you have a lot more freedom within your ECM and EST bubbles.

True. They're more than happy to settle for blowing up every other race until they're the only ones left.

Only if you're using salvaged Mastodons, vlaiger. (that's a Ritterlich insult for Adonese in case you're wondering )
