I am working through painting 30 dragonforge bases for what I call my 'cult'. I got some minis coming in from several places to create a 'cult' and they will be based on these. I have about 10 done now I do believe.

I am also painting up this serpentfolk evoker from the reaper pathfinder line. I am running Serpent's Skull, so I can't not really. :) That said, I didn't like the paintscheme so I am mixing it up with him.

I also run Skull and Shackles and got all the reaper minis from that in recently so here is a WIP on Elizabeth 'Inkskin' Locke. The color of the 'blue' is really more teal, but it is a quick picture.

Last thing I am currently working on is a Reaper spider (the one also in bones, but I got the metal one). I could use some really good paintscheme ideas that match with the base I just painted for him.

I intend to add cultists and venomous creatures from Reaper to this cult.

A monk from the Monastery of St. Martin stands with a prize maus kow.

The same monk looking over the monastery's herd, source of some rather... *unusual* yogurt and cheese.

I figured that a herd of some kind would be an interesting terrain feature for skirmish games.  They can make a decent objective,  stampede in random directions if someone gets too close, or just sit there munching.  Plus Mouslings just simply aren't going to go without cheese.  There's also the annual race, inevitably known as the Maus Kow Circus.  

My one year anniversary as a figure painter was on March 14th of last year. I've just now begun to get a handle on doing the basics pretty well. There are many improvements I need to make yet as you can plainly see.

I have just now started working on my basing and although this isn't very good, for me it is a step up.

Goldar ended up being a great mini for him, just added a fin (which I've been getting practice at), switched out his axe for a spear, and added a naga head to his belt. Whatever species the character is worships nagas, and his guy is evil, so he killed one and carries it around as a trophy.

Unfortunately the camera washed out the colour on him. The green is much brighter, and has more highlights, and the naga head is a bit grayer. Cause it's dead and decayed.

Comments, critique, suggestions all appreciated. Before I send it to Wyoming.

This after about 2.5 hours of work. Initial Purple tones laid in with airbrush. Then I toned the purple and did some spot highlighting. This will be for the table top not competition.

Go take a random bones figure, paint some nice, flat part of him with the non-thinned paint, as we have been instructed to do, and then just leave him for a few days.  Then scratch the paint with your fingernail. 

So far the couple of times that I've done this, I've been able to pull essentially all the paint clean off.  This makes me nervous.  I know people are talking about how well the reaper paints are supposed to adhere to the bones, but unless I can be sure that the paint is really not going anywhere, I still feel like I need to finish these guys off with some sort of matte varnish.  I paint these guys to look nice, I don't game with them, yet...but I do have a 2-year old running around the house, so I just assume that all of my things are going to get hit with a baseball bat at some point.  I figure, any paint that I can pull off with just a fingernail needs to be varnished on, if I really want it to stay there, and I haven't yet gotten it to stick. 

Any thoughts?  I hear all the time about people really abusing their painted bones and being really happy with it, but if I can't be really sure that the paint isn't going anywhere, I still would want to varnish. 

I sorted out all the minis I wanted to painted that would fit in the case.

after about a month: koboolds, goblins, 10 adventures are painted. At least a few are on a shelf of shame, waiting fixes

the goblins seemed very paint friendly, with large eyes, protruding eyeballs, and interesting details,

but something went wrong. advice is welcome.

The skeletal mage's staff is from the WF Orc box, I just put a skull on top of one of the spear shafts. The soil and such is added and does not come with the models crawling out of the ground.

I have only recently gotten back into painting minis. My Girlfriend has had more experience painting than me, as she is an actual artist. 

The zombies are part of a theme with the blue being frozen, the red being burned, the yellow being desiccated, and the others being putrefied.

I'm trying to get back into painting, after a good decade or so of not painting much of anything.  

This WIP is mostly about trying to finding some colors that will work well with Quickshade Strong and trying out painting Bones.

I'm only looking for table top quality (and not sure I'll get there...)

Also, I'm doing these Bones during my lunch hour at work, so it's whatever I can cram in in a hour or less, per day.

Sloppy base coating, but I was late getting started, so I rushed a bit more than usual.

Within the new category, publishers can post about their latest issues and Reaper forum users can talk about those issues or specifically their articles, pictures, and more.  It would also be a nice place to post discussions about ...

 It also has an arcade, which consists of mostly Chucky Cheese-style games such as ski ball and shooting basketball hoops. Much like a Dave & Busters or other such place, you can put money on a card and swipe it at each individual game to play. And, of course, these games all spit out tickets you can cash in for prizes. It also has a couple things like Guitar Hero, one of those dancing games, and Fruit Ninja (the phone app) on a fairly large tv screen. They also give out tickets. If you're really good at Fruit Ninja, it gives out a lot of tickets, lol.

My average score on FN is usually around 300-425, which equates to somewhere between 60-80 tickets or so per game. My high score is somewhere just over 650. Pretty much every weekend, I go down to catch one of the free shows (big name acts like Debbie Harry, Blues Traveller and Vince Neil) and then drop about $25 in the arcade playing Fruit Ninja. Because I drop so much money in there, they upgraded my swipe card so that I get five free games every time I go in there - which means that I can get somewhere between 300 and 500 tickets just for showing up now, hehe...

 Now, you may wonder what someone does with thousands upon thousands of tickets, but unlike most other places, the prizes here don't stop with candy, rubber toys and cheap plastic jewelry... You can get things like an iPod for 15,000, a camera for 19,000, etc., all the way up to 70,000 and 90,000 for iPads and something like 150,000 for an XBOX.

 Wanna know what 30,000 tickets gets you?

 I just picked up a 7-inch16-gb Kindle Fire HD...

 I loves me some Fruit Ninja.

1. Lay down a base of terracotta milliput, with some miniature bricks set in (can't remember the company the bricks are from), chamomile tea pressed in, and tree bark pressed in. One new thing I tried was using an incredibly fine silicate for sand instead of the usual playground sand - since clay is composed of such fine silt, I thought it appropriate. Unfortunately, its fineness and (I think) its very nature as a silicate made it difficult to glue - there is less than I had hoped on the base. The guy in the center, as you may guess, is the brute.

2. Once the squad's base holes have been figured out and the groundwork done, basecoat of armory white. I went for white because I believe it will be easier to control some of the more subtle shadows with washes instead of just straight black. You can see some of the Rag guys here, too.

3. Start off with a couple think washes of red liner. Nothing is spared ;)

4. Pick out the stones (tree bark) by drybrushing heavily with Privateer Press Cryx Bane highlight, all the way up to Liquitex Titanium White (edges). This will be toned down by the clay drybrushing colors.

5. Then, I heavily drybrushed A 50-50 mix of tanned shadow and PP Skorne Red. This will be the basecoat for the Ragnarok men's skintones.

6. Add palomino gold and continue to drybrush, lightening pressure.

7. Add bleached bone, lighten to pure bleached bone. Touch up rocks.

8. Current state: 

For now, the goal is to keep touching up the base, adding interest with more washes (dark reds, greens, yellows, and purples - complements), and adding terrain features (bushes, etc)

I'll be in touch soon! As always, comments and especially criticisms are welcomed. My paint hand is rusty.

The plan is to repose his arms so that he's weaponless, and use green stuff to sculpt cool looking claws on him. Here he is after I took out his weapon.

I tried boiling him like a bones mini to repose his arms but that didn't work. I also tried soaking him in Simple Green to take the paint off but all that did was make him stink of licorice. I hate the smell of licorice. 

So, here it is, and I can move on to other minis :)

If it helps, he has really really high charisma and loves the ladies.... and they love him back... this can lead to some "difficult" situations including escaping out windows wearing very little....

I haven't been able to find a character to accurately represent this...

Hey you, the one without any color, you're boring.

Why is this? I'm guessing people just never look at rocks or think it's too hard to do anything else.  This is quite far from the truth as painting up rocks can be really easy if you’re willing to break some standard painting conventions.

In this tutorial I'm going to cover some basic basing techniques including using real rocks and how to quickly sculpt some when using real rocks won’t give you the look you want as well as painting two different rock color schemes: desaturated (basically its sort of gray but has color) and something a little more complicated.

Using Real Rocks

This one is pretty obvious but I’m surprised with the number of people that actually pay for rocks, we’ve all seen them at hobby\game stores and why pay for something that you can get for free?  I went outside and over the course of two days just collected random rocks from the street gutter and have more then I’ll ever use.  I kept a small bag, like the ones sold in the jeweler section of hobby stores, in my wallet and just stopped and filled it up when I say something I wanted.

One note is that more porous rocks are harder to work with when it comes to the prep aspect, as they don’t glue or take primer as well, but are easy to dry-brush so there’s a trade off.  Keep a mix if you can but pick up what you like as that’s what’s really important.

Quick Sculpting Rocks

So what if you need something like paving stones?  Well you can quickly do this way faster than you’d expect thanks to some help from Mother Nature.

The first thing we’re going to need is some rocks.  What? You may be saying to yourself “this man is crazy (but really good looking so I’ll listen to him some more)” which is a common reaction I get.  One of the best ways to make something you sculpted look like a rock is to use one to texture it so we can quickly and easily get the random surface that a rock gives you.  You’ll want to get a collection of rocks with more jagged edges, smooth edges and any other type of edge out there. These will be only used for sculpting and will get messy if you’re using anything but Green Stuff (or similar epoxy) so have a good place to store them.

The two I'll be using

In this tutorial I’ll be using a clay like epoxy called Milliput, though Green Stuff will work as well, as I like how easy it can be to work with and takes to texturing with real rocks (especially when wet).  There are two type of Milliput White and everything else.  The white one is an extra fine and not needed, all the other colors are the same just with different coloring with the most common type being yellow.

A note on working with Milliput: This stuff does not come out of things when dry so it’s highly advised to use an apron or clothing you don’t care about as it can get really messy if you get it wet—which I like to do. Also wearing rubber gloves will make your hands happy.

I start out with mixing up some Milliput and then putting it right to work—there’s no need to really wait like with Green Stuff—in building up my rocks.  This base is one I’m going to be using with water so it’s recessed (see my Ice base or water base tutorials).

I’ve make one bolder on the left and then pavers all the way to the right.  I get the Milliput wet and smooth it out (really easy with rubber gloves as there’s no worry with finger prints).

I then take my texture rocks and get them wet—this way you don’t have to worry about whatever you’re working with sticking to them—and then start pressing.  There are no real rules on how to do this as every rock is different and so are people’s tastes.  Just take some time and find what you like.

Once that’s done I’m going to sculpt in the paver’s edges and touch up edges with my rocks again.  This step and the previous one really can be done in any order but I find touching up the textures to be easier then the lines (as all that pressing is going to cause some to disappear).

Now we set aside our base for the Milliput to dry (it takes as long as Green Stuff so doing this before bed or work is ideal).

Prepping the base

Now that everything is dry I’m going to add a real rock to the base as there’s no real reason to sculpt a free standing rock like this unless you can’t find something you like.  Plus this will let you compare my quick sculpted boulder to a real one.

Now I’m going to prime them white.  The reason for the white is I’m going to show you how to add some quartz to your rocks so the white base coat will work perfectly for this.  If you have another type of mineral you want to add, like a metal, feel free to paint some spots of those colors in now (though it’s probably not best to do it 100% that color unless you want a lot of it showing through).

Even if you're not normally a fan of heavy metal, you may want to give it a listen. From the samples I've heard, it's actually really good. He's actually singing ( great voice, I might add ) and it's done very well.

I haven't been around lately so I feel like I missed out on a lot of cool stuff that's been happening here.  Tell me about them.  =D  What fascinating or weird things have you seen or done recently?  Heard that the convention went well.  ^^

As for me?  Let's see... oh!  Here's a few that pops into mind:

• I moved!  ^__^  And I read a lot.  Not all of them were good books...
• Got a niece that will graduate from an "army intelligence school" pretty soon (which will probably allow her to read all my correspondence and bank statements) and another that's about to graduate from high school with honors.  Makes me feel old, but proud.
• I met someone who could lick their own elbows!  It's... really freaky.  I certainly can't.  I mean, can you?
• Never actually manage to get that Olympos game.  ::Sad face::
• Built several new tables and workbenches and one cabinet in little over a month.  Then I realized that I really don't have room for them.  Tch.
• Started a garden.  It has cherry tomatoes, peppers, roses, perennials, et cetra.
• Has ordered the Bones Minotaur 77013 for the fourth bloody time (I think) during Comic Book Day seeing how it keeps disappearing!
• Which reminds me, I went through a real world labyrinth and at its center was this, er, altar.  My friends looked at it and then back at me grinning there and after a moment of indecision they physically and forcibly dragged me away from it.  I think they were just playing it safe and didn't want to open some otherworldly gate or unleash something terrible held elsewhere or within the labyrinth (which was built upon the ruins of an old mental health hospital that burned down--honest!).
• It occurred to me that I may NOT be a very good pinochle player. 
• Learned we can't "shift" jury duty around with someone else that has the same name with this new system they implemented back in early Spring.  Don't get me wrong, I don't mind serving, but I do mind if I have to sit around all day at the courthouse waiting to be called, y'know?

Here's the first, the patriarch, Koshrel Ska'rae, (03316) Kar'Drakir. I've put in spikes to make a fin on his head, took off his base (a total pain in the hand), drilled holes in his back for wings, and sculpted armour on his chest. I'll be sculpting armour and straps on once I get the wings on, which will come after the fin for his head.
