For the next guy I want to do modern military/historical so here's a head - the new technique, as instructed by master Gene is to have a nub and then make the whole face in one go. Very excruciating. The third one came out alright. The first was too small (if you can believe it) the second too big.

Despite my most heartfelt efforts the macro photography still reveals some scrummy looking details. I guess it really all boils down to having a bunch of experience. And eye pain.

First sitting (on the third try).
Macro photography reveals not so great looking eye lids.

Retailer in North Florida? (Specifically Panama City Beach or Panama City)

Hello all,

I wasn't sure where to put this, but this forum seemed as good as any. Please feel free to move it to the appropriate location.

I have a friend in the Panama City Beach, FL area, and she's trying to get into miniatures, and perhaps even miniature gaming. Does anyone know of any hobby stores in that area that stock miniatures (PP and Reaper miniatures more specifically)? Hopefully there is at least one store up there that handles the miniature gaming hobby close by.

I did get her some minis and a paint kit from Reaper online, but I would like for her to have a local place as well, if that's possible.

Razig’s Dark Maiden and crew

It’s been some time now that I’ve started working on that diorama. With the coming ReaperCon I was inspired to remove the dust from it to complete it. The boat was made out of a toy and all miniatures will be Reapers.

For now the crew counts 12 painted miniatures; Sergeant Blackknife, Sergeant Grim Pete, Jackie, four Bone Marines, two Zombie Recruits, a Chain Gang, a Cannoneer and a Skeletal Crewman.

The miniatures I’m actually painting are; Razig and Crow, the Dark Maiden attached at the ship bow, Baron LeBone, Mister Blood and Clarissa the Banshee.

The models I still need to prepare and paint are; an Harpooner, Salty Saber, Scurvy Dog, Scuttlebones the Undead Crab and some Canons.

I also have four Skeletal Swordsman and Razig Weapons Pack which I could use to create some original character.

Just curious if there are any WWE fans here. Every PPV my gaming buds and go to the local BWW and watch the PPV. However since I am going to be by myself, I was curious if anyone else cares about the fake stuff and wants to join me since things will be died down by the time the event starts.

Kobolds (Super Dungeon Explore)

Ok, I've started painting up Kobolds from my Super Dungeon set. Here are the first three of them to be finished.

One note here- I'm intentionally painting all of the kobolds differently for a couple reasons. First, my wife wants to paint a bunch as well, and we don't want to worry about them matching. Also, both of us were feeling a little sick of painting units, so painting them each as individuals should help them look terrific. We're going to try and make them match in style, but no two kobolds are going to be colored the same:

Kuro's ReaperCon Dwarves

Well, so they're not really Kuro's dwarves; I'm just their maker. They're really the loyal followers and friends of King Dolgrim the Steadfast!

As some of you may know if you've been keeping an eye on the ReaperCon section of the forums, I have set before myself the grand goal of completing a Warlord army to take with me to ReaperCon. However, a few of you may also be aware of the fact that I've NEVER truly finished an army for any miniature battle game before. That's a grim history, but history is about to change!

First up is the army list:

King Dolgrim the Steadfast (counts as King Thorgram Grimsteel)
Mithril Armor
Moril the Mender (counts as Ivar Silverfist)
Margara Firetongue
Shieldmaiden
Berserker x 2
Warrior x 3
Halberdier x 4

Troop 2
Tolin Deathbell (counts as Tohil Steadyhand)
Kirabell Sureheart (counts as Kara Foehunter)
Piercer x 6

Troop 3
Svar Blackbolt (counts as Snorri Oathbreaker)
Magic Ranged Weapon

Troop 4
Luck Stone

Next, a brief note on tactics:

The goal of this army will be to present an impenatrable wall with the king and his line of warriors while Svar and all the other archers thin the enemy ranks and try to keep the main force from being outmaneuvered. Along those lines, the main force will follow the buddy system. Each warrior and the shieldmaiden will be teamed with a halberdier while the king will have Ivar's healing support. The berserkers will watch the flanks or act as shocktroopers or speedbumps. Margara will have a more loosely defined role, but I do want to see her cast Barrage on Svar and turn his RAV 6 shots into 3" poisonous AOE blasts. Speaking of Svar, he'll lay down the heavy firepower and make the enemy mages keep their heads low, and he'll do it all from stealth. Lastly, Tolin and Kirabell will direct the fire of the piercer company; trying to cope with fast threats or approaching hordes.

Stubbdog also made the astute observation that I won't always be able to sit back and let the enemies of the dwarves break themselves upon my might shield wall , so other tactics are in order! Hopefully, in situations where I need to move and capture objectives, the main block of troops should be able to advance in reasonable order while the berserkers function as shock troops and the archers provide covering fire and deal with flanking attempts. And, hey, if all else fails, dwarves are natural sprinters, right?

Alrighty! Now that we've got all that out of the way, here's the troops! (20 down -- 2 to go! I will post the finished pictures up here in the first post while new additions will both be placed here and in a later post to "bump" the thread when I add new stuff.)

The army as it stands:

Fiasco! at ReaperCon 2012

So this year I have volunteered to bring Fiasco! to ReaperCon. Games will be held at Noon and 4pm on Friday, and 10am and 1pm on Saturday.

If you are unfamiliar with Fiasco!, it is a GM-Less role playing game where the players are fully to blame for the story. Using an incredibly rules lite system, 3-5 players will construct a story in the vein of the Cohen Brothers' films in which fairly average people get into situations well over their heads and are then subject to their own self-inflicted downfall.

It is a truly co-operative storytelling experience. I will be on hand to introduce the game, assist with the rules, and sit in on tables that have too few players. I can't claim to run the game because it mostly runs itself. I will have a small selection of playsets to choose from at game time.

For more information, feel free to visit the Bully Pulpit site and read more about Fiasco!

The base is custom made from a Hirst arts mold and dental plaster. Entered in the Sping Reaper mini painting contest as well.

Female Huckster (two versions)

Female Huckster was such a cool little mini that I wanted to get two copies painted up. I had a few ideas of how I wanted her to look so I couldn't just do one.

There's a more or less "Celtic Lass" version with the green (at least that's my intention, she could be well...anything you want her to be... really) and then there's the Blonde with the purple dress, just a femme fatale with her little gun in her garter. Love that little touch on this sculpt.

She had a very "Disneyesque" face, which surprises me that word isn't underlined in red by my browser...anyway I wanted to give her nice big eyes to suit that look of the sculpt. Really fun to paint. As a side note about bases, I think from now on I'm just going to buy my bases from various base makers and paint those up as I spend far, FAR too much time making mine from scratch always to be underwhelmed by them. As my painting skills slowly (glacially) improve my base-fu isn't catching up even though I put more effort into them. I bet I can paint the pre-made resin bases and base inserts up like a devil though, which will finally complement all the time I spend on these minis instead of looking so half hearted. Nowadays (yall) we're spoiled for choice with so many awesome bases from different makers, may as well just invest in a bunch and start using those. Maybe Reaper should make some hrmmm.....

A few quick questions about Hirst Arts Molds

So I just a call from home, and my molds and dental stone arrived today! So naturally I'm stoked to get home and start playing with it all. I have a couple of questions though before I get started.

1. I know to clean the molds and such before I start, but does anyone know of any other pro tricks to keep bubbles from forming while I am pouring the stone? I bought the debubblizer stuff and am going to try that, but does it work as well as the wet water method?

2. Merlin's Magic is expensive to ship!!!! Is it really worth it? Is there something else that is readily available that I could buy instead? I am really looking for something strong that I can still work with for cutting and sanding.

3. What do you guys use to cut down blocks when you are building? A kife? Something else? Along that line, what grit sand paper should I be using?

4. I don't have a dehydrator handy, so does anyone have any suggestions on how to best dry them out? I was thinking oven over night, but I don't have a clue what to set the oven to.

5. Do you guys prefer to do the varnish before painting or would regular spray on primer work as well or better?

6. Anything else a noobie should know before diving in head first?

Thanks guys!

The two surviving members of the Great Dog attack of 2012.....My dog (who thinks she is a cat at times) decided to see if my minis tasted as good as they looked. I had originally painted all four goblins, but these two were the only ones to survive. i use them with our Pathfinder RPG game so I kept the bases plain. This is a speed paint job. I wanted them to look dark (unlike GW gobbos) and I also liked the "wet" look of the LotR orcs. So I combined the two looks and this is what I got:

Getting started

So, I have been trying my hand at sculpting. It's been a very hit or miss kind of experience so far. I'm having a good time, and I am not getting too bent out of shape while I overcome the learning curve. Couple of things that I have learned so far.

1) Going from polymer clay to epoxy putty was a bit of a culture shock. The looming time limit of the "pot life" has been a difficult mental barrier to overcome. I felt like I was fighting time and the putty to achieve the results I wanted. After reading through some of the threads here, it was made clear that the putty needs time to set before you really start working with it. I fond that mixing up a small amount of putty and just smooshing it, stretching it, generally just playing around with it helped a great deal. Understanding how it "ages" eased that feeling of fighting the clock and my inadequate skills.

2) Finger prints are beginning to become an issue. I am working with an armature and it's set in a cork, so you wouldn't think prints would be much of a problem, but they are... How do you guys deal with finger prints? It occurred to me this morning that I could try wearing latex surgical gloves. But that seems like overkill, and fairly uncomfortable. Plus I don't know if the putty would stick to the gloves becoming a new issue. Right now I am just using my tools and mineral oil to smooth away the prints, but it seems like extra work, If you could avoid prints in the putty in the first place.

3) Reading though a few threads, some have mentioned using plastic wrap to help smooth surfaces. But, I haven't caught when it would be appropriate, or the techniques involved. No detailed descriptions, just vague references. So what's up with plastic wrap?

4) When the pros are sculpting a large monster for casting, do they use 100% epoxy putty? That sounds like it would get expensive. Right now I am working on a monstrous centipede that is Sculpy core to bulk up the form and ProCreate for the detail work. I think that will work great for my personal collection, but If the sculpt was going to go into production, I doubt that would work.

Anyway, thanks in advance for taking the time to read though my questions and any replies.

Coordinating Rides/Rooms

Hey guys, figured we probably needed a thread just for coordinating rides, shared rooms and that sort of thing.

I'll start with I'm looking for someone to room with or somewhere to crash. I'm coming in late Tuesday night the 15th and leaving for home mid-evening Wednesday the 23rd. If anyone is coming or going then carpooling to and from the airport would be great as well. I know it's both showing up earlier and leaving later than most people, but I'm hoping that maybe someone else likes to take things leisurely too, or perhaps there's someone local I could crash with who that timetable wouldnt be a problem for? I'm happy to pay my way, and could even offer some painting lessons in trade if there's an interest.

Phlebotomist Fairy, looking for suggestions

This is my most ambitious project yet, I haven't been painting that long. Only a year or two. And this is the first time I had use green stuff to modify the mini.
So this started out as gift for a friend, now it is a very late gift for a friend but I had a lot of issues ordering the parts through freebooter which started it off being late. They sent me the wrong parts twice. Once was my fault (can't damn them for that) and the other was theirs, but they graciously sent me the correct parts free of charge. (As always the parts I ordered from Reaper had no issues.)

Anyway, the mini consists of the following sepearte pieces Body, Leg, Arms, Hands(which are from a different freebooter mini), Wings, Base (from the same mini as the hands). Later I will also be adding one of the Reaper cats to the base.

Now for some technical questions:
1. First off I use spray primer, and while it works great most of the time, sometimes it leaves bumps. Is there a way to prevent this?
2. The paint is looking really thick, either chalk it up the the primer or me being lazy and not watering down enough, is there a good way to fix it without stripping? (I would hate to green stuff it all again)
3. I drilled holes for the wings, hopefully I drilled deep enough. I play on adding green stuff to inside the holes to support it. Any advice on the wings would be helpful, never attached wings before.

And some creative questions:
1. What color should I do the wings? I could continue the black and pink theme, but I was also thinking of making the veins in the wings like a red and blue circulatory system to go with the whole phlebotomist theme.
2. I was thinking of adding some kind of swirly simple Celtic knot design to the back of the skirt, would that be too much? I could always tone down the pink on the skirt.

So, I know that even if the paint looks thick (photos always make it look worse) I know my friend would love it, she is not a mini enthusiast, I just wanted to make her a mini that represents her. She loves fairies, she is pagan (which I wanted to represent is some sort of symbol somewhere), she's a phlebotomist, and she is into the emo style. She has an orange tabby named Milo that is the biggest freaking cat I have ever seen (I think she said he is between 15-20 lbs and he is not fat.) Which, if I had the room on the base, would be funny if I used a mountain lion instead of a cat to go with her.

Any suggestions or critique is welcome.

Reaper Spiders

Hey all.

I'm new to these boards. Been wargaming since mage knight and got into the craft part of it about a year ago. I play GW LOTR SBG, but my friend and i have started buying Reaper minis to make our own characters. (I also started using Reaper paints after i got tired of GW's paints)

I have a few questions about some of the monsters that Reaper makes.

1) I've wanted to get some spiders. Hows the scale compared to that of GW? The giant spiders seem like a match to theirs.

2) Are there any Reaper Dragons or Trolls that fit the scale?

Thanks for answering to those who do.

Oh, Any Oregon gamers on here? Seems like this state lacks in the gamers. :(

I'm sorry to have to say this, but with only ONE Dwarf model in the new Dark Heavens Bones lineup, this is doomed to failure.

But, up the Dwarf count, and voila! Instant success!!

Actually, I am glad that someone finally came out with plastics that AREN'T prepainted! Prepainted are cool for people like myself who don't paint, but if I am trying to fill in a couple of gaps in my army, chances are high the prepaints won't match.
