We are not lazy, just trying to be careful.
But the carefullness does not do anything to draw in new customers, it largely plays to your metal consumer base, take a tiny risk, as I go over at the end, and you could get so much more reward out of the line. The very carefull aproach isn't drawing in new
Dragon Snack if you are going to say I said something, then do it correctly I said “I might” and turns out I won’t as because by possibly design or coincidence right around the announcement of these 4 boring minis, WotC released the latest DDM set Dangerous Delves which had some Goblins. So the two I might have picked up would have been a Goblin three pack and the bugbear…
However as I buy singles of DDM, I a recently went to my favorite single DDM seller and purchased a few of the Goblins, and a few other of the minis from the release I was interested in, and I was done, and spent far less on the Goblins than I would to get three of these LE Goblins, and the minis I picked up were all pretty cheap (all cheaper than anything done in the LE so far).
While I was there I could have picked up other goblins, 5 in total, which ranged from 0.39 cents each to 1.99. Even the most expensive goblin is on par with these (1.93), but there are many far cheaper. Had I not gotten those goblins when they were also in the 0.50-cent range I might have picked some up, but hey I own them already.
This got me thinking, with the cheaper floaters from other sets around, I looked at the Bugbears, and there were 7 Bugbears, going for on average $1, ranging from 0.69 cents to 1.69. The looking at the bugbears and goblins also made me realize I can totally pass on the LE figures as likely by the time Reaper gets around to releasing both the Goblins and the Bugbear, a new 40 mini DDM set will be out, (current projected release date is August 18th, the next set November 17th) that’s around 48 easy chances to get a new out of production type back in, before LE covers it.
Based off of price and the fact I know an out of print will be back in production at some point, and in a new look/pose for variety, the only reason to buy the LE Goblins for me, I know where I will get my bugbears, same place I got my goblins.
I just won’t pay the $5 to get one from you guys when I could get 5 or more for that price, and the Spiders and Werewolf were covered and a non starter to begin with. I can get so many more spiders of that size at a Dollar store that are pre-painted that it’s not even worth it to look at that miniature (and wow many of the dollar store spiders look more like spiders than that), the werewolf is just uninteresting to me.
While the Reaper supporters will chime in with “But those DDM will go out of print at some point these will be around for ever!” I say “So what
, WotC will at some point in the next 4 months release another 40 minis, there is a good chance there will be something that remakes an out of print mini species in there. So I will just pick it up next time, cheaper.”
It’s not like the LE are rushing new figs to the market, at the trickle of 4 Mini every other month (which we still haven’t seen yet, and won’t come about till likely October or November) by August the next DDM set, and likely a cheaper reprint of a some LE figure, will be released, and the set after that is only a month or so away from the next LE release in November. Reaper will at current peak production ideals get out 4x6 minis a year or 24 minis. If I’m going to have to wait to get a type of miniature, either from Reaper getting around to producing one of it, or WotC putting out a new sculpts of a currently out of production mini type… huhm tough choice but I think I will wait (no choice really) and buy the cheaper one when it comes out. So Reaper losses out.
Now if Reaper put just 1, and mind you it’s 1 figure from the four they are putting out so it’s 3 bread and butter and a non bread and butter, (or 1 ever other release for 1 in 8) that wasn’t one of those stock figures, and it was something that you can’t get anywhere else, I’d buy it at the $5 price tag, as I want it, and know I can’t get it anywhere else. It's all simple supply and demand, the I have a supply of cheaper minis, that matchs my demand elswhere, untill I get something that isn't supplied elsewhere there is no reason to buy these.
The cost of producing the molds of the single one-piece figure like a Bugbear or townsfolk is going to be about the same. The price for sale is likely going to be about the same. The difference will be that the people who have been buying the DDM for the last 6 years and who have all of these things, will be looking at the LE encounter line because it will contain things they can’t get elsewhere. I'm not even at this point asking for “large” or bigger minis. I’m asking for the Chronoscope, and other “medium” that just don’t exist in painted plastic anywhere else, to get people to look at LE as a source of minis.
Many of the RPG forums I visit have people buying cheap DDM as singles in secondary market, the Miniatures forums as well, and everyone looks at LE as the same old same old but with a higher cost, and such a slow production run it’s not the first, nor second, generally not even a thought to look at for product because the selection is so limited, and it’s growing so slowly. There is nothing to draw the interest of people. Toss in a few of the not so common minis every now and then, and you get people looking at the non common figure because they just can’t get it anywhere else, and likely buying/ordering some of the “common” figures as well.
As it is there is nothing to make me get even a single of the bread and butter minis, give me a non bread and butter to get me in your door and while I’m there I’d likely buy one of the bread and butters for variety sake in my encounters, but till you get me in, there is no reason to buy these as I can get them cheaper and likely faster in another source.
