Danel embodies the reason that Gerard is most in danger from his conservative elders in the north, for he abandoned his sacred responsibility escorting his Chronicler sister to join the ranks at Denelspire and fight the war for freedom in Taltos. His sister Catalin blames the Duke for the swaying of her brother from what she considers the true path, and Danel knows that she will not have a glowing report of the Crusaders to bring to the Templar High Council.
Nonetheless, Danel believes that what Gerard is doing is what is right in the eyes of Aurellius, and he knows that he is certainly more needed here than in the politically-infested headquarters in Pelise. A great admirer of Sir Daman, even knowing that he was removed from command, Danel now helps the heroic knight train the warhorses ridden by the Lion's Lancers heavy cavalry unit, and himself leads them into battle.
